It was a crime that sent shockwaves through Houston in 2017: a 15-year-old girl murdered by gang members in a satanic sacrifice.
On Wednesday, one of those killers was sentenced to 40 years in prison for the shooting death of Genesis Cornejo-Alvarado.
The sentence was part of a plea bargain after Diego Hernandez-Rivera, 22, agreed to plead guilty just before jury selection was set to begin on Monday.
“This is a tragic case of a runaway girl falling into the clutches of a dangerous and violent gang,” District Attorney Kim Ogg said. “We will not stop in our pursuit of violent criminals who band together to terrorize communities and murder innocents.”
Hernandez-Rivera, who went by “Scary,” also pleaded guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in exchange for 12 years in prison. Those sentences will run concurrently.
The other suspect in the girl’s death, 26-year-old Miguel Alvarez-Flores, pleaded guilty to murder in February and was also sentenced to 40 years in prison.
Cornejo-Alvarado’s family in Jersey Village reported her missing in January of 2017. Police believed she had run away with a man to New York.
Prosecutors planned to show in court that the teen was with the gang and was chosen as a sacrifice and shot to death. Her body was dumped in the Sharpstown area.

So these animals are Satan worshippers? Whoda thunk that?
The more things change, the more they stay the same...

Act of love says Yeb!
I remember those murders of those two girls. Terrible.
They worship death. We should accommodate them.
They were probably followers of Santa Muerte (Spanish for Our Lady of the Holy Death).
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Muerte
Despite condemnation by leaders of the Catholic Church, and more recently Evangelical movements, her following has become increasingly prominent since the turn of the 21st century. Their pseudo-Catholic chapels now dot Mexico, and merchandising has spread to the US.
Santa Muerte is also known by a wide variety of other names: the Skinny Lady (la Flaquita), the Bony Lady (la Huesuda), the White Girl (la Niña Blanca), the White Sister (la Hermana Blanca), the Pretty Girl (la Niña Bonita), the Powerful Lady (la Dama Poderosa), the Godmother (la Madrina), Señora de las Sombras (”Lady of the Shadows”), Señora Blanca (”White Lady”), Señora Negra (”Black Lady”), Niña Santa (”Holy Girl”), Santa Sebastiana (”Saint Sebastienne”, i.e. “Holy Sebastian”) or Doña Bella Sebastiana (”Beautiful Lady Sebastienne”) and La Flaca (”The Skinny Woman”).
It’s a clear rip off of an Aztec death god. Mictecacihuatl (or Mictlancihuatl) the skeletal Aztec goddess of death.
In the late 2000s, the founder of Mexico City’s first Santa Muerte church, David Romo, estimated that there were around 5 million devotees in Mexico, constituting approximately 5% of the country’s population.
By the late 2000s, Santa Muerte had become Mexico’s second-most popular saint, after Saint Jude, and had come to rival the country’s “national patroness”, the Virgin of Guadalupe. The cult’s rise was controversial, and in March 2009 the Mexican army demolished 40 roadside shrines near the U.S. border. Circa 2005, the cult of the Santa Muerte was brought to the United States by Mexican and Central American immigrants, and by 2012 had tens of thousands of followers throughout the country, primarily in cities with high Hispanic and Latino populations. As of 2016-2017, the cult of the Santa Muerte is considered to be one of the fastest-growing new religious movements in the world, with an estimated 10 to 12 million followers, and the single fastest-growing new religious movement in the Americas.
Did the prosecution think their case was so weak they had to offer a plea bargain instead of prosecuting and asking for the death penalty?
Kewl. Now what?
*PING*
Houston is a pit.
MS-13 vs BLM. - who do you root for?
“José Ernesto Medellín appealed his execution, saying that he had informed City of Houston and Harris County police officers that he was a Mexican citizen, and that he had been unable to confer with Mexican consular officials.”
Undertakers ...
I had posted a thread about Pena and Ertman back in 2007...see below. Although the girls were about 10 years my junior, seeing their pics made me think they could have been people I could have known in highschool. Horrific their deaths.

What’s the spread? MS-13 is bound to be a heavy favorite.
So Kim Ogg offers a plea deal so they would be out in a handful of years to terrorize again?
I don’t like her. She fired a number of good prosecutors simply because they did not follow her personal agendas.
Santa Muerte is a very dangerous cult. Worse, they have the potential to become a nightmare, comparable to the Persian Order of Assassins or the Thuggee. All they really need is a charismatic leader.
The problem with death worshipers is that their sacrament is homicide. Even their own death is good as an offering. The British in India realized how dire this is when a group of Thuggee were to be hung, and the nooses were around their necks, they jumped off the gallows, killing themselves before they could be executed.
Such dedicated fanatics have no problem murdering about *anyone*, including women, children, and their own families.
In the US, very quickly people would realize that no Hispanic could be trusted, and undoubtedly some Anglos would go for the whole serial killer thing. Scary if it’s just a few, but terrifying if there are hundreds.
I don’t necessarily think it was a literal Satanic sacrifice. Santa Muerte is popular amongst these kinds of gangs, annd a shrine to them can easily be mistaken for a shrine to Lucifer.
Different deity, same outcome.
