She went through menopause in that time frame. It can really screw up your hormones and metabolism and frankly the medical advice given is stupid and useless both on menopause and on losing (or not gaining weight).

Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome can really mess women up. It's an endocrine issue. Makes losing weight damn near impossible. No cure. Barely any treatment. It can cause infertility, weight gain (with no increase in calories consumed). It's a real PITA to deal with. Dieting doesn't work. Exercise helps, but is frustrating when the weight barely moves.
