During Ramadan they "fast" during the day but pig out after the sun sets. No big deal but their death cult promotes hedonism rather than the nobler values actual religions espouse - so they make a theatrical show about how their supposed suffering is an example of piety.

Combine that with how their quasi-theocratic dictatorial leaders keep them amped up with hatred for all non-Islamic things while purposely keeping the bulk of aid for their elite...not unlike how the worst rednecks purposely abuse pitbulls to cultivate viciousness.

And we all know the merciful thing to do for a mad dog is to put it down.

That gives him a temptation to resist, making his fasting more sacrificial.
