Saw a man play this instrument in Missouri one time, his name was John. Wrote and played his own tunes. A very rare, unique and enormous talent. Was wondering about other dulcimer players.

As a drummer I always wanted one. Found several plans back when to build your own. Never got to play one though.

A friend of mine in college made a plucked mountain dulcimer as a project for a music course. Being brilliant, he also learned to play it quite well and aced the course.

John Jacob Niles sang in a high falsetto and played Appalachian dulcimers which he made himself. His recordings were often very haunting.

Give a listen to ‘Little Black Star’ by Niles.

Franz Liszt in some passages of the Hungarian Rhapsodies emulates the sound of the hammer dulcimer which was known as the cimbalom at that time.

A damsel with a dulcimer
In a vision once I saw;
It was an Abyssinian maid,
And on her dulcimer she played,
Singing of Mount Abora.

I’ve seen a handful of excellent players. Actually, Bruce Hornsby played on one of his tunes, including during live performance years ago, I think it’s “The Red Plains”. I saw him do it the first time I saw him years ago, but, uh, disclaimer because of failing memory. :^o
