To: Hot Tabasco
I've always wondered about the difference in motivation between the North Vietnamese and the South Vietnamese people. It seems like the NVA were prepared to endure anything - for years - to win, while the South Vietnamese didn't really seem to care much. They sure didn't commit to the fight like they were in an existential struggle. You would think that some of the stuff the VC did to the villagers to coerce their cooperation would have inspired a white-hot hatred.

I was too young to follow things at the time, so maybe my perspective is skewed. I'd appreciate any insight from those who know...

Chinese take the centuries long view, and the NVA was supported by China. That’s the answer. The Viet Nam war was never going to be over, just like the Korean war is not over. US doesn’t fight with a long view. We need things settled instantly. Our people are instant gratification types.
