“Garry Owen was the unofficial marching song of the Seventh Cavalry. Gen. Custer reportedly heard the song among his Irish troop and liked it. The tune was then played so often the 7th became tied to it.
The tune is first documented as Auld Bessy in 1788. It was later (1800) in the opera Harlequin Amulet (the Majic of Mona). About that time it was attributed to “Jackson of Cork” by a book of Country Dances by William Campbell. It also appeared in part two (1802) of Nathaniel Gow’s four volume Complete Repository of the Original Scotch Slow Tunes.”
“They Died with Their Boots On” starring Errol Flyn as Custer has a scene in which the song was adopted by the 7th Cavalry. “Newspaper Illustrations” featured in the film glorifying the adventures of Custer were done for the film by The American Illustrator John Alan Maxwell. My father.

Recent article: unwinnable war grinds on
By Joseph L. Galloway | McClatchy Newspapers

This is the only problem I have when “We Were Soldiers” is mentioned. I’m wondering how you folks who were there deal with the apparent change in Mr Galloways attitude, and I know he was there with you during the battle.

I personally respond to Mr. GALLOWAY’s anti-BUSH liberalness by countering his views with my ALOHA RONNIE posts of CLARITY on the Internet and with calls into Talk Radio/TV on the issues of the day. Especially in this new time of war with our own Freedom now directly at stake right here at home.

I also remain true to my committment to Freedom’s return to Vietnam, its preservation here, and its spread ‘round the world.
Regardless of the personal sacrifices made:

I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thanks for the response, I wondered. It is hard to fathom how someone can experience what he did with your unit, and today stand where he does relative to the freedoms we have both fought for. Regardless of the country or President involved.

I love Mel Gibson, He stuck it to all in Hollywood and did the Passion by himself and cashed in! I’ve seen all of his movies and they are all spectacular! I especially enjoyed The Patriot and Brave Heart
