From his press release:

"Assemblyman Van Tran Assembly District 68 Proudly Serving: Costa Mesa, Garden Grove, Westminster, Fountain Valley, Anaheim, Stanton, Newport Beach. . . ."

I hope they're proud of Mr. Tran. I certainly am, and I don't even live in California.

From 'The Buzz' Local Section of today's Orange County Register:

THE FIREWORKS BEGIN

Assemblyman VAN TRAN, R-Westminster CA, had barely announced his interest in running for state Senate last week when Senate Republican Leader DICK ACKERMAN began making calls - including one to the Buzz - to say that Assemblyman LYNN DAUCHER, R-Brea CA, was the better choice.

ACKERMAN said that DAUCHER has the support of the majority of the Senate GOP caucus and that because he was in charge of funding that seat's highly competitive battle with Democrats, he wanted DAUCHER. She confirmed to us her plans to formally announce her candidacy next month.

TRAN - with whom ACKERMAN is not on the chummiest of terms - has key supporters who say he's the premier candidate for the heavily Vietnamese district. Co-chairman of his campaign exploratory committee are Rep. DANA ROHRABACHER and two former state GOP chairmen, MIKE SCHROEDER and SHAWN STEEL.

On the Democrats' side, Assemblyman TOM UMBERG, D-Santa CA, is the only declared candidate, but county Supervisor LOU CORREA is thought to be measuring his odds. The November showdown between each parties' nominees will be one of the few opportunities Republicans have to pick up a seat in the Senate.
