If John Paul II can forgive him, I suppose it's appropriate for Catholics like me to as well.

"If John Paul II can forgive him, I suppose it's appropriate for Catholics like me to as well."

Is it "appropriate" for a heathen such as myself not to forgive him and to demand that he be put back in prison?

I'll even go one better: Execute him in Rome.

Well, forgive him then. And you can share the guilt when he kills again.

Mercy to the cruel is cruelty to the merciful.

We can forgive him but that does not mean he should be walking free amongst us.

"Upon his return to Turkey, Agca immediately was sent to prison to serve a 10-year sentence for murdering Turkish journalist Abdi Ipekci in 1979."

You and the late Pope are free to forgive him all you want, but since he is not only an attempted assassin of the Pope but an actual murderer of that journalist he should never get out of prison. Just how many murderers have to be released before we learn how few of them are 'rehabilitated'????

Forgiveness is one thing; he can sleep at night and consider his conscience eased. The victim has the right to grant or withhold forgiveness. But society must decide, independently of that, whether someone is a threat and should continue to be held under the law. I see no contradiction between being forgiven by the victim and still incarcerated by the state.

I'm not an RC so I have no reason to forgive a man that murdered a journalist and tryed to murder a living saint. He should have been hung.

There's certainly a strong argument to be made for your position. However,a few months after being released, what are the chances that we'll find this guy carrying a rocket launcher in Iraq?

That photo inspired a song by one of my all time favorite Christian artists, Steve Taylor.

To Forgive
Steve Taylor

I saw a man
he was holding the hand
that had fired a gun at his heart
oh, will we live
to forgive?

I saw the eyes
and the look of surprise
as he left an indelible mark
oh, will we live?
to forgive?

Come...find release
go...make your peace

Follow his lead
let the madness recede
when we shatter the cycle of pain
oh, we will live
to forgive

Come...find release
go...make your peace

I saw a man
with a hole in His hand
who could offer the miracle cure
oh, He said live
I forgive
(repeat)

Oh, He said live
to forgive
oh, He said live
to forgive

You have nothing to forgive him for; did he sin against you?
