Rice: Minority as president? It'll happen, but won't be me
Associated Press

WASHINGTON - Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says she expects to see a U.S. president from an ethnic minority during her lifetime, but it will not be her.
Rice's audience of young Latinos laughed and applauded when she said it Friday, and she responded with an embarrassed grin.

Rice, who is black, has been asked repeatedly whether she plans to run for the open Republican candidacy in 2008, when her boss, President George W. Bush, completes his second term.

On Friday, a young man from Texas attending an annual Washington conference of Latino and Latin-American students asked the secretary whether she thought it possible that "a Latino or Latina person or an African-American person or a person from any other minority" might become president.

"Yes," she said, prompting first the knowing laughter, then applause. "I think it will happen, and I think it will happen in my lifetime" - more laughter - "but it won't be me."

She said she bases her opinion on a course she used to teach at Stanford University: "The Politics of Elites."

The title means, she said, that candidates advance to the presidency by serving in other capacities, such as a state governor or a senator.

"So watch what is happening with the Congress and with the Senate and with our governors, and ... how the diversification of American politics at lower levels is becoming greater and greater, because those people then become the pool from which we will one day select a president," she said.

Do you mean "be a candidate," or has candidate suddenly become a verb?

Rice does not want to become US president

Many expected the duel of two women for the US choice 2008: Hillary Clinton vs. Condoleezza Rice. Now the Foreign Minister excluded a candidacy around the highest public office. Its boss George W. Bush stolpert meanwhile from inquiry low to inquiry low.

Washington - Condoleezza Rice counts on the fact that soon a Latino, Afroamerikaner or a member of another minority will dress the highest office in the USA. "I think, that will happen", said her on a meeting of Latin American students on Friday in Washington. "it will happen still at my lifetimes - however I will be it not".

I still wish she would run, though. I am sure she would face Hillary and would easily trample her in an election.

I wonder that you aren´t surprised. I thought she´d run. Rice vs. McCain in the pre-elections would have been interesting.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>.............
interesting, it would be a joke on a major scale: with Ms Rice we get an unknown on many issues from open borders to big gov spending to taxes on and on much too premature to be extolling Ms Rice.
As for McCain he is clearly demented, a sick man, broken in prison delirious with his cancer therapy - a labile personality with many episodes of Rage and anger.
A man who supported the loss of free speech and continued open borders..McCain is an old man trying to obtain some legacy..both these people have too many negatives to be a serious contender in GOP primaries.

A candidate can "kandidieren" in German. So I actually thought it´s also a verb in English. But once again, I have to learn that the English language doesn´t have the same variety of words we have. Or how would you call a Reichstagskuppelinstandsetzungsschutzgeländer?

Michael - Sorry, I just couldn't resist! Yes, it's old news over here; she's said many times that she won't run. But you know American politics far better than I know German. Thanks for posting!
