I love swede but I never put sugar on it just butter, salt and pepper.

I also add it to most of my stews and casseroles along with parsnip as well.

I prefer parsnip roasted though with the fat from the meat so it is lovely and crispy but not burnt.

Our highschool has a powder puff game every year. Years ago the girls got to suit up in the guys uniforms, but now it's flag...still fun to watch, some of them are darn good! Both my girls can throw preety good spirals! Both played and had a fun time, just wish they could have a girls team.

I should tell you that while our Internet was down last evening, we had a romantic date at Applebee's in our Ohio State gear............kinda combining the two principles. :)

(Actually at least half of the people in the restaurant were similarly attired, and we're a long way from Columbus!)

We also saw "Flags of Our Fathers" and both were very impressed with it.........I recommend it for all.

We never got that sanctioned. It was just the neighborhood kids playing tag, or touch, football in the biggest front yard in the area. Sometimes the only reason *the girrrrlz* (picture eye roll here) got to play was because the parents who owned the biggest front yard were on hand to say the boyz had to let us play. But once they accepted The Inevitable, it became fun for everyone, although the boys knew they had to hold back their strength and it irked them. I learned a lot about competitive sports from those games. More than I ever learned in all-girl sports in PE.

What can you tell me about the gore factor in "Flags"? If a movie is like "Private Ryan," I find I do much better waiting till it comes out on DVD so I see a smaller picture and can fast forward it.

23-6, huh? : ) I don't feel the emotion for UW as I do for UM and I don't follow UW sports. I think it's different for grad school folks.I think when you're an undergrad, living on campus, the whole environment is just more school focused. Now I commute almost an hour to get to school and if I don't have to go in, I don't. I've had a good time here, I got a great education, and will be proud to have my doctorate from UW, but even tho my favorite color is purple, my blood is blue.

Glad to hear this arrangement worked out for everybody. I'm convinced that if boys and girls rough-house together while growing up, they get along much better as adults. That said, the few times I tried playing competitive or contact sports with girls, I wound up hurting them. One girl got her hand broken. Didn't mean to do this, but by that time I was programmed to win at all costs. I just wasn't wired to hold back, so I stopped playing these sports with girls. I'm glad that there are boys who are willing and able to contain their aggression a bit.

It taught us girls how to aggress and it taught the boys how to hold back. We quickly realized we weren't going to get anywhere unless we put about a thousand times more oomph into the effort. The guys quickly realized, with strong parental eyes overseeing the goings-on, that they had to hold back or somebody was gonna die lol because we were all putting everything we had into the games. We had such a great bunch of kids in the neighborhood that it really helped. No bullies, and the parents were salt of the earth. The yard we played in was owned by a school principal and a homemaker mom with five children; Baptists, just solid, down-to-earth, good people and they weren't crazy about having broken kids in their front yard.

Some of my best memories from childhood are of the many games we played, all summer long, in the street by their house and in their yard (front and back); also family backyard picnics with them. Squareball in the street, kick the can in the yard; on rainy days, rambling around their huge house and playing games. I loved being invited to stay for dinner after a full afternoon of playing.

I hadn't thought of it but I agree with your assessment of boys and girls rough-housing competitively and how it helps them get along better as adults. And as teens, I'm sure.

What a wonderful memory that must be!

I envy you, GM. A memory I would gladly trade for yours is the afternoon I was dumb enough (at age 16) to let my girlfriend's sister into our game of tackle football in the rain and the mud. To make a long lurid tale short, I wound up having to carry this muddy incapacitated creature-in-agony to her front door and make my lame excuses to her enraged father. I still cringe over it.
