WASHINGTON Bruce Crandall was a soldier once ... and young. As a 32-year-old helicopter pilot, he flew through a gantlet of enemy fire, taking ammunition in and wounded Americans out of one of the fiercest battles of the Vietnam War, Army records say.
Now, a week after his 74th birthday, Crandall received the nation's highest military honor Monday in a White House ceremony with President Bush.

Those NVA regiments had the LZs zeroed in and they were 'hot'. It took uncommon valor to go in again and again.
God Blesses the United States armed forces with men like Major Crandall.

Washington State Ping....I understand this hero was from Bremerton, WA
Long may you run, Mr Bruce Crandall. You exemplify heroism and sacrifice. You are 1000 times the hero that frauds like John Kerry are.
Bump and ping!
Thank you LCOL Crandall!
Wow. Just wow.
First, Congratulations to LCOL Crandall on his earning the Medal of Honor. Serving like he did took uncommon courage.
While not to diminish his actions, I can not help but wonder that if a movie had not been made about him if he would have received the Medal? Thoughts anyone?
amazing, I just re-watched the movie "we were soldiers" last night. some powerful moments in that movie.

They say Bremerton because most people don't know where Manchester Washington is. This is where he lives now. He has not always lived in Manchester.
I'm very honored to be doing the ceremony tomorrow on the Pentagon Channel.
The movie took a lot of artistic license. The assault that occurred at the end of the movie never happened and the majority of the casualties at Ia Drang were were not suffered by LCOL Hal Moore's BN but by the units that RIP'd him. They were ambushed on their way to LZ Albamy once LZ Xray became too hot to allow extraction. Historical accuracy aside, it was still a good movie with lots of dead dinks, which is always a plus.
Here's the music to go with your hero bump:

Why did he have to wait 40 years? He could have died before he was so deservedly honored. God Bless Bruce Crandall and God Bless our military - the best Americans!
Nam Hero Finally Recognized appropriately
