There are some things you just can't say, not even in jest.
Coulter can indeed say whatever she wants, in or not in jest - and she did precisely that. What she and her defenders seem to be looking for, however, is the ability to say whatever she wants, no matter how offensive, without the need to face the consequences.

Why is what she said offensive? Is it more offensive than Breck Girl or girly-man? If so, why?

She will "face the consequences" and do fine without our help. The "consequences" are, after all, a raft of fellow conservatives PMS-ing about something that didn't even make the news on Sunday, showing how much the liberals give a s--t about such things.
I have to say, I am more impressed by David Bonior and John-boy's reaction than I am by the sputtering deacons of the Church Conservative.
