100 Million Victims of Communism Memorial Dedication = Minimal Liberal Media Coverage
NewsBusters.org ^ | 6/13/2007 | Michael Chapman

Posted on 06/13/2007 8:56:25 AM PDT by Pyro7480

The liberal media love to talk about "victims," particularly victims of alleged economic or social oppression, such as illegal immigrants, children without enough Head Start funding, the homeless, the transgendered, detainees at Gitmo, and so on. But when it comes to victims of left-wing ideology--i.e., Communism--the liberal media don't say too much. And this is evident in the minimal (in my view) coverage given to the dedication of the Memorial to the Victims of Communism in Washington, D.C. on June 12, an event where President Bush spoke and where some of the world's leading experts on communism's atrocities--more than 100 million victims--spoke as well.

From yesterday's dedication of the memorial, there has been some print coverage, yet most of the stories have been buried inside the papers. For instance, Los Angeles Times, p. 15; Chicago Tribune, p. 3; Miami Herald, p. 17; and the Washington Post (registration required) placed the story in its Style section but did run a page 1 story in its free "express" newspaper, distributed around D.C. Good for The Post. But, so far, I have not seen any network news coverage and only one mention on MSNBC in a Financial Times article on the MSNBC Web site. You'd think a memorial dedication to the 100 million victims of the greatest evil in modern times would get a little more attention from the dominant liberal media---but perhaps the "victim" Paris Hilton is more important to them.

Marxism-Leninism (communism) dominated the 20th century, sparked the Cold War, and through political terror and government-made famines and communist labor camps killed more than 100 million people. Lenin and Stalin instituted a system that killed at least 25 million people; Mao Tse-Tung and China, 60 million victims; Pol Pot in Cambodia, 2 million victims; North Korea, 2 million victims; Ethiopia, 725,000; Vietnam, 1.8 million. The list goes on.

Communism did not fail so much as it was never really tried.

Yes, I am being ironic.

We should make sure people we know hear this news through our own personal networks. Send out links to people you know. We can get stories out by word of mouth (or maybe electronic word of mouth, or EWOM)

The problem with Communism is that it defies Human Nature. Therefore anyone with Free Will must be crushed or killed.
In Cuba, Free Will is considered a Mental Disorder by the state.

Yes, I am being ironic.

What's amazing is how many people still say that in this day and age...and don't mean it ironically.

Since the Cold War days, the MSM has been like a watermelon. Green on the outside, red inside. They followed the leftist Dems in never apologizing for their Cold War mythical love for the Reds and always blaming America.

Funny how American communists morphed themselves into the “New Left” in the sixties when the crimes of Stalin & Co. became widely known. Then they morphed into environmentalists, progressives, feminists, and you name it. They keep distancing themselves from discredited labels but can’t seem to discard their underlying philosophy that requires people be subjugated to slavery. They are the modern democratic party and the MSM journalists constitute the democratic party’s Pravda

The triumph over communism is only partial. This country is still run by people who don’t think it was that bad. Therefore, minimal news coverage.

The triumph over communism was only partial because the U.S. (indeed the entire West) is still run by people who think communism wasn’t that bad. Therefore, minimal news coverage. A disgrace.

Here for the President's remarks at the dedication.

This memorial has been a long, long time coming, and it represents but a small victory. Anyone recall the campaign to recall Will Duranty's 1932 Pulitzer for his lying, white-washing reportage from the Soviet Union? -- another huge historical stain yet in need of cleaning.

The NY Times is still excusing Duranty:

Duranty's cabled dispatches had to pass Soviet censorship, and Stalin's propaganda machine was powerful and omnipresent. Duranty's analyses relied on official sources as his primary source of information, accounting for the most significant flaw in his coverage — his consistent underestimation of Stalin's brutality.

Describing the Communist plan to "liquidate" the five million kulaks, relatively well-off farmers opposed to the Soviet collectivization of agriculture, Duranty wrote in 1931, for example: "Must all of them and their families be physically abolished? Of course not — they must be 'liquidated' or melted in the hot fire of exile and labor into the proletarian mass."

Taking Soviet propaganda at face value this way was completely misleading, as talking with ordinary Russians might have revealed even at the time. Duranty's prize-winning articles quoted not a single one — only Stalin, who forced farmers all over the Soviet Union into collective farms and sent those who resisted to concentration camps. Collectivization was the main cause of a famine that killed millions of people in Ukraine, the Soviet breadbasket, in 1932 and 1933 — two years after Duranty won his prize.

Even then, Duranty dismissed more diligent writers' reports that people were starving. "Conditions are bad, but there is no famine," he wrote in a dispatch from Moscow in March of 1933 describing the "mess" of collectivization. "But — to put it brutally — you can't make an omelet without breaking eggs."
"...his consistent underestimation of Stalin's brutality"...???

Seems to be an ongoing disease. Did The Times recognize yesterday's memorialization of those victims Duranty wrote off in the name of a better omelet?

Oh, just a little anti-Bush AP article, that's all.

Whats wrong with communism, every country should have some?(SARC.)

We have a communist media in all print and broadcast mediums, with a very few exceptions. Thank goodness those exceptions are loud.

The major cultural problem is that the communists of the USA think they are modern day Robin Hoods, when nothing could be further from the truth.

Yes. But IMHO you have the causation backwards. Leftism is simply the promotion of criticism and second guessing over concrete accomplishment. And when journalists promote themselves, they are promoting criticism over accomplishment.

Objective JournalismTM has motive and opportunity to be leftists shills, with or without the Democratic Party. Objective JournalismTM gives politicians positive or negative labels according to whether those politicians engage in and promote the criticism and second guessing of the people who get things done. And in Objective JournalismTM's lexicon, "liberal" and "progressive" are positive labels and "conservative" is a negative label.

Why Broadcast Journalism is
Unnecessary and Illegitimate
