The Left's Ongoing Viet Con

Vietnam: Nothing destroys conventional wisdom like the truth. Those on the anti-war left don't like to be reminded that the fruits of their policies are death and defeat. But the lie they agree upon is not history.

In 1975, Sydney Schanberg wrote a piece for the New York Times about the consequences for the region of our abandonment of South Vietnam.

It bore the Orwellian title: "Indochina Without Americans: For Most A Better Life." Substitute "Iraq" for "Indochina" and you have the Iraq plank in the 2008 Democratic party platform.

Last Saturday, the Los Angeles Times ran a piece by Andrew J. Bacevich, a Boston University history professor and Vietnam War veteran, that fellow vet John Kerry could have written, and which could have borne a similar title regarding Iraq without Americans.

Professor Bacevich takes President Bush to task for reminding the Veterans of Foreign Wars last week that, far from enjoying a better life, the people of Indochina, after they were betrayed by Democrats, became victims of the "killing fields" of Cambodia, inmates of the re-education camps of Vietnam or, if they were lucky, boat people in the South China Sea.

Right on! The South Vietnamese ARVN Troops held out against the NVA for almost two years after we withdrew our troops. Senator Ted Kennedy will occupy a special place in hell for his role in cutting funding for South Vietnamese aid to the point where the soldiers were left to barter for mortars in order to defend against NVA attacks. It was that vote to cut the funding and the inaction in response to the initial probe attacks by the NVA that led to the fall of Saigon. The NVA bet the farm on that invasion, the Soviet Union had given them the last of what they were going to give.

The fall of Saigon could’ve been stopped by air alone. I have to fault President Ford for not going against Congress.
We made promises to those poor people and we left them to a living hell without the means to defend themselves. It was shameful.

When confronted with the truth in a manner that makes dodging difficult, the last refuge of the liberal is to do exactly what Jane Fonda did when asked if she felt any responsibility for the tens of thousands of Vietnamese post-war deaths. She said it was not her responsibility.

Savage is right: liberalism is a mental disorder.

President Ford did go to Congress. Congress turned him down.

It doesn’t change the fact he could’ve taken some action outside of ordering a full deployment. He didn’t.

Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory in Vietnam continues to be a defining accomplishment of the left-wing radicals of the Watergate generation.

It is rivaled only by their success in spinning the myth of U.S. defeat & sustaining that myth for over thirty years . Here’s another article (posted on FR about 3 years ago) that covers this leftist myth in more detail:

He asked Congress with $722 million for emergency military assistance to South Vietnam. They told him to get lost. He asked for clarification of his authority to use force to protect the lives of American servicemen still in country e.g. at the embassy. They gave him none. When there are already 10 NVA divisions inside the country and ARVN was collapsing, he asked for $300 million to fund evacuation efforts. They said no.

Nor was this an aberration. The following year, after already seeing the consequences, they passed another law preventing any discretionary use of funds by Ford to prevent a communist takeover in Angola. Communists took over Angola.

It was not Ford's fault, it was all the congress, and before that Nixon having the bad sense to break laws and get caught.

Thanks, at first I mixed up IBD, Investors Business Dealers, with IHT, International Herald Tribune, a NY Times subsidiary. I was like, what’s going on?

The left’s eternal ignorance about Vietnam never ceases to frustrate and anger me, especially considering my father served over there as an EOD.

Vietnam, aside from being a crystal clear (for true Americans, at least) example of what happens when the RATs run wars, is also a crystal clear example of how ignorant and stubborn people can be. No matter how many Vietnam vets, scholars, and other people who were either there or have done their research stand up and say otherwise, the RATs, who probably couldn’t even find Vietnam on a map, continue to plug their ears and repeat their BS version of what transpired over there...and slam anyone who disagrees.

“and before that Nixon having the bad sense to break laws and get caught.”

Congress was dead-set against winning in Vietnam before Nixon even took office. Watergate or no Watergate, chances are events would have been the same. They would have just found a different way to circumvent the President’s war authority (perhaps a Vince Foster solution?)

And technically, Nixon didn’t break the law, did he? I learned in History class that he didn’t know about the break in and only tried to cover it up (a good idea considering what the RATs would do if they found out. He just didn’t do a good enough job).

Nixon was perfectly willing to bomb the beejesus out of NVN and he won re-election in a landslide. Opposition to the war outside of radical left circles evaporated with the draft and the withdrawal of US ground troops. The country rejected the defeatist line every chance they were given. They just didn't think they were voting for defeat and capitulation in 1974. They thought Nam was over and they were just voting out a crook.

The hard left has tried to pretend ever since that everyone always agreed with them over the war - which ignores McGovern's catastrophic defeat. And that the war was unwinnable because the VC could hide and stuff - which ignores the fact that the VC was gone and it took ten divisions of Russian armor to destroy SVN. It is all lies and always has been. US airpower plus ARVN were enough to defeat NVN in 1972, and would have been plenty in 1975. But the hard left did not want to stop losing boys in a far away land. They wanted communism to win and their US enemies to lose.

They still do.

True!

My father, a loyal Chicagoland Democrat had detested Nixon for years but voted for him rather than McGovern, whom he saw as weak on defense. Both my father and another Democratic friend called me long-distance, to try to convince me to vote for Nixon, but I was still a kneejerk liberal in those days.
