Blurry screen syndrome....thanks for posting this. It’s in TIME Magazine....I would NEVER have read it otherwise.

Great story. Thanks for posting it.

For once, Time has risen above its petty ideological fixations and written about a real hero, and written it well.

Good for them. If they did it more often, maybe their company wouldn’t be going down the tubes.

Most excellent that part of Rick Rescorla’s story would be told once again in Time magazine. People will learn from his example on 9/11. There are more lives yet to be saved by Rick. He couldn’t have a finer legacy.

Rescorla taught Morgan Stanley employees to save themselves. It's a lesson that has become, somehow, rare and precious.

Once we were scorned and young. But the tide turns.

A kick ass Bravo Zulu to Rick Rescorla, Soldier.

Thanks Ronnie!

In this day and age where Mayor Bloomberg will go after gun dealers in the state of Georgia, one wonders if anyone dared prosecute the port authority officer who locked the roof doors at the Twin Towers, preventing rooftop rescues on 9/11/2001...in contrast to the successful roof rescue from the twin towers after the 1993 garage bombing there.

Rescorla felt it was foolish to rely on first responders to save his employees. His company was the largest tenant in the Trade Center, a village nestled in the clouds. Morgan Stanley's employees would need to take care of one another. He ordered them not to listen to any instructions from the Port Authority in a real emergency. In his eyes, it had lost all legitimacy after it failed to respond to his 1990 warnings. And so Rescorla started running the entire company through his own frequent, surprise fire drills. He trained employees to meet in the hallway between the stairwells and go down the stairs, two by two, to the 44th floor.

I used to work in a mid-rise building. We had fire drills. Periodically, the fire alarm would go off, and the fire marshall would come on the loud speaker, indicating that it was NOT a drill, but we were to stay at our desks.

I NEVER DID THAT, but immediately headed for the fire escape because, I always knew that I WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR MY OWN SURVIVAL.

Given the prospects for strong leadership in this country, I guess this is a timely piece.
