Airline Bomb Attack Thwarted by Passengers

They heard a pop that sounded like fireworks. They saw a glow of flame followed by a rush of smoke. And that was enough for passengers on Northwest Airlines Flight 253 to pounce.

From several seats away, Dutch tourist Jasper Schuringa says he jumped to extinguish a fire ignited by a quiet man who just moments before allegedly told passengers his stomach was upset and pulled a blanket over himself. Schuringa said his first thought wasn't to signal a flight attendant or wait for an air marshal to break cover, but rather, "He's trying to blow up the plane."

"I basically reacted directly," Schuringa said Saturday in an interview with CNN. "I didn't think. I just jumped. I just went over there and tried to save the plane."

Aviation safety experts once would have called Schuringa's actions a mistake and cautioned passengers against fighting back during hijackings and other crises in the air.

Jasper Schuringa clearly did the right thing. His actions may have saved the plane and all the people in it. I am glad that a Dutch citizen had the courage and presence of mind to react quickly and properly.

“The system worked”

Indeed. It’s a great system that works I hear. You are flying on a plane and see someone trying to blow it up and you try to stop that. I think the system is called self preservation. Most sentient humans have it.

How’s it feel, Jasper, to be suddenly part of “the system” that worked? Are they going to give you expensive healthcare and a golden pension like Janet gets?

He is not qualified. But if he was a stupid, ugly, fat, white, dike looking bitch then he might have a chance.

I’ve missed the coverage of what has happened to the manager and gate agent that allowed the “suspect” to board the plane without a passport.

Without their wonderful assistance, we would not be talking about this.

He would have been turned over to security and they would have questioned him and his well dressed associate and maybe have made an arrest.

What if anything has happened to the agents?

It’s as though they allowed him to board and figured they would let the US Immigration deal with him.

Makes no sense. How many others from around the world are boarded without documents and thrown in the laps of USI?

Sorry, I have no faith in the head dyke at DHS.

The crew and passengers indeed acted bravely, but saved the plane? ...I don't think so.

If the inept muslim bomb-makers had made a better bomb, by the time everyone heard the pop sound and saw the smoke, the bomb would have gone off and most likely downed the plane.

We now have an international branch of the Weather Underground.

Wondering if Ayers is their official advisor on bomb making and mayhem.

We can exclude much of New Orleans from that group, then.

I think this is a spin by the news media to protect the administration.

Yes, in the end the passengers helped keep the bomber from doing any more than he did.

But the bomber had already pulled the trigger. The plane SHOULD have been destroyed.

What STOPPED the plane from being destroyed was that the bomb’s trigger mechanism failed to detonate the bomb — it fizzled, catching the guy on fire instead.

By saying the passengers stopped the bomb, the administraiton gets to pretend “the system worked”. But in fact, the passengers only had their chance because the bomb failed to detonate as planned.

We know that the detonator SHOULD have worked, and we know that if it had, there was enough explosive to take down the plane, especially since the guy was sitting in a location where the fuel tanks would have been involved.

The system failed. A guy with a working bomb got on a plane under Obama’s watch, and when we got lucky and his bomb failed to detonate, the administration tried to claim “the system worked”, suggesting they should get CREDIT for the failure of the plane to blow up.

Where were the screeners? Were were the machines that detect bomb materials? Why didn’t years of preventing innocent citizens from carrying small amounts of liquid on the plane fail to stop the bomber? Why did a guy reported by his father get on the plane? Why wasn’t he at least on a “search carefully” list?

The administration failed — this was the 3rd terrorist attack on U.S. soil since Obama took over, promising to “make america safe” by selling out to the enemy.

Every time a newspaper says the passengers prevented the bombing, the newspaper is doing the bidding of the administration.

The passengers should all be dead. We got lucky. Obama thinks “lucky” is how the “system works”.

Any fire on any plane can take it down. For the given state of events, the primary issue was to put out the fire. Whether or not it exploded does not diminsh the fact that a fire in an aircraft is a very ominous event and the quick reaction of the Dutchman may have diminished the effect of the process or interrupted it entirely as he ripped the thing apart that was burning in an effor to put it out.

What if the passengers had refused to take action, because of PC? What if they had looked at the creep and decided that it wasn’t politically correct to jump on him, grab his explosives, and beat the excrement out of him? What if they feared unjust prosecution by an unjust “justice department” and the lawsuits?
This passenger did the right thing. PC kills.

Our federal government - whose JOB it is to protect US citizens from these enemies wishing to do us harm - is no longer interested in the job.
They are more interested in ‘protecting the country’ from Fox viewers, Republicans, Freepers, Christians, etc... -whom they deem the ‘REAL’ enemies.

I fly for work EVERY week. It is up to US to be prepared to defend ourselves. When you get on a plane, you have to think like a cop. Watch what’s around you, look at faces.

We cannot trust the government to protect us any longer.

He is not qualified.

I agree. He does not have the proper certification or license and probably absolutely no diversity sensitivity training. This must not be allowed.

As an aside, this guy said he was having stomach problems and pulled up a blanket before trying to detonate his device. Another Nigerian on the same flight number but a day later stayed in the john for over an hour complaining of stomach problems. More dry runs for observation purposes before another big one?

This is the same "system" that has Navy Seals on trial for giving a terrorist they captured a black eye.

I'm surprised they don't have Mr. Schuringa up on charges!

No one stopped this attack, the bomb failed to explode and caught on fire.

Had the trigger worked they all would have died.
