Can Jerry Brown and Andrew Cuomo govern?
WaPo PostPartisan ^ | Nov. 3, 2010 | Charles Lane

Most of America turned red last night, but I was struck by the continuing blueness of two of the nation's largest states: California and New York. Voters there chose the old-time Democratic religion, in the form of governors-elect Jerry Brown and Andrew Cuomo. Not only is Brown a former governor from the 70s, he is the son of a former Democratic governor from the 50s! Of course, Cuomo's dad was guv once upon a time, too. Admittedly, only Brown faced serious opposition. But the margin of Cuomo's victory on an night when other Dems running statewide won more narrowly was impressive.

I can't quite understand why either man would want the job he has just won. California and New York are not only among the largest states, they are arguably the two most dysfunctional, with massive fiscal problems and chronically unruly legislatures. There is a real question as to whether either one is governable at all anymore.

This is what happens when the NY GOP cower to the Dems in NY and put up the worst candidates with no support whatsoever.
Carl Paladino was not the NY GOP’s choice, Rick Lazio was and he lost in the primary, so the GOP abandoned Paladino from the start.

I don’t know either. I was so happy to get to vote for my conservatives in NY only to see that I was basically outnumbered three to one.

Very discouraging by people who I think should know better.

It’s like when Massachusetts voted down the tax decrease in the state a couple of years ago. What the hell ??

It’s like telling the pols to “hey, you need more money? Please have some more of mine”.

Crazy

The Coumo machine has been suppressing, bamboozling and dictating the minority population of New York State since the late 1950’s.

Back then my family lived around the corner from old man Coumo during his early politicking years, young Andrew has connections that go back to before he was born... he will not have a problem swinging the big stick, the question is how disproportionally will he remove state funding from minority majority communities in New York State.

New York is bankrupt, Andrew is in for a world of hurt, the Coumos have only been in politics to extract wealth from the state, now that the spigot is dry Andrew is going to *GASP* actually attempt to properly govern in a democratic republic.

"I can't quite understand why either man would want the job he has just won."

Because neither man is interested in forwarding the interests of their states and their residents. They are in it to make sure they and theirs are taken care of and have well-feathered nests, the rest of you little people be damned.

Unlike presidents, few Governors worry about their "legacy." Unless a Governor has designs on higher office, they tend to result in little more than a name on a list in a state history book. Palin will be different, and certainly there are a few others, but for example, think of Dick Thornburgh. He presided over PA during Three Mile Island, ended up as Reagan's AG. What else is he remembered for? Do you know if he's still alive?

Name the last eight governors in your home state and what their legacy is. See what I mean?

Jerry Brown is a joke, so he fits right in with the CA legislature. CA has just lost it’s one remaining opportunity to turn it around.

As for New York, they deserve what they will get.

Moonbeam, are you kidding? Just listen to him, OMG! He screwed the state twice before; third time it’s toilet bowl. Companies and people are leaving CA by the thousands. The entire state will be on welfare with no monies coming in. Watch CA fall into the Pacific without an earthquake.
