It’s surprising how often that sort of thing happens. In WW2 this was a prevalent story, carried by escaped POWs and others from the Philippines. The US press didn’t run it at the time, as well as what they considered the more lurid stories of treatment of POWs, etc. It was likely to be seen as propaganda.
It all turned out to be true, in spades.
