I am good friends from college with a Jewish fellow who came from New Orleans. His politics would be considered RINO here, but his would-be RINO parents were registered Democrats. The reasoning was that the primary was more important than the General Election (this was the early '80s). In like wise, conservative Robert Novak was a registered Democrat in D.C. The whole thing is self-perpetuating.
