What is constantly overlooked is that the legislature has no Constitutional authority to have a law enforcement arm, most especially a 'riot police'. We have tolerated the Capitol Police as a sort of 'hospitality' police with some limited enforcement authority.
Pelosi had grand ideas however. After her riot police gassed and clubbed innocent citizens, even the elderly, and killed two or three people (without any consequences), she announced her intention to use an arm of her Capitol Police as a counter-intelligence operatives! She intended to start with Florida and California, surveilling potential anti government protesters. That is a bit the same way the Nazi SS came into being and grew - as protecters of the party government officials.
I contacted Gov. DeSantis and alerted him to this gross unconstitutional abuse of police powers; he immediately announced his intent to block such a move.
I think this discussion brings us back to the summer of 1932, and the Bonus-Army situation in DC....with the final answer being that DC police could not handle the mess, and the US Army (not the Guard/reserve) were detailed to bully the crowd into leaving.
There’s never been a full accounting of who funded the Bonus Army existence for almost 2 years, or the amount of blame dumped on Hoover for the order.
