A New York county executive plans to "deputize" legal gun owners to help law enforcement officers during emergencies, but the move is facing pushback from critics who say it will lead to acts of vigilantism.
Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman said the deputies must be over 21 years old, be U.S. citizens and Nassau County residents, undergo a full background check, take a drug test and have a valid firearm license. They would be paid $150 a day for their service, according to the plan.
"They will have to be trained on the law and use of force," Blakeman, a Republican elected to the county's top post in 2021, told CBS News New York on Sunday. "And if I were to use them, it wouldn't be for normal police functions. It would be for protecting infrastructure like hospitals, power plants, mosques and synagogues, and things of that nature so that we could free up our police officers to do other work."
Over 100 people submitted applications for the openings after Blakeman and Nassau County Sheriff Anthony LaRocco posted an advertisement on the county’s website in March seeking candidates for "Provisional Emergency Special Deputy Sheriffs."

Only now, that this is being proposed, are the Democrats in that county concerned about public safety.

Ok, so get rid of those police officers who risk their lives daily, because you must “defund” them because far left wing nuts say you have to, then when crime goes up hire trigger happy citizens for $150 a day. With a little training, send them out to fight bath salted crazies. Makes perfect sense right?

Nassau is a tough Purple county on Long Island. To her east is Suffolk County which is solid Trump territory. Together, Nassau and Suffolk pretty much define what it means to be from Long Island.

Deputizing civilians had been a long standing policy in the past.
For example in Wis. at one time until the 1990’s all town board and city board members where considered peace officers.
The sheriffs would issue what where called dollar a year deputy cards. Meaning he pay then a dollar a year.
With the change from peace officer to Law Enforcement officers and all the training requirements.
That came with that the old peace officers went away.

Sheriff's posse, or reserve sheriffs has long been a way to ramp up police forces to deal with emergencies.
They would have been called "select militia" in an earlier age.
Ok, I probably exaggerated a bit, but They are not going to have the degree of training that police officers have to have today in most states, and I don’t think an average citizen would have the restraint required sometimes. Me, for example would probably shoot first and ask questions later. So I guess I’d consider myself “trigger happy”.
A relative in Montana was regularly asked to assist county and state police. He was very familiar with the terrain, and a very disciplined and accurate shooter. A true throw-back.

The attack on Johnson stopped when the plant's chief operating officer, Mark Vaughan, yelled at Nolen to stop and then shot him, according to testimony.
Vaughan, a reserve Oklahoma County sheriff's deputy, fired a rifle three times as Nolen rapidly came down a hallway holding the knife, according to testimony.
After the third shot, Nolen leaned against a wall and slid down.

Yep. And there is absolutely zero constitutional justification for federal police forces or police powers.
