Road Trip: Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California

Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton is the major West Coast base of the United States Marine Corps and is one of the largest Marine Corps bases in the US. It is on the Southern California coast, in San Diego County, and bordered by Oceanside to the south, Cleveland National Forest, San Clemente, and Orange County to the north, Riverside County to the northeast, and Fallbrook to the east.

The base was established in 1942 to train U.S. Marines for service in World War II. By October 1944, Camp Pendleton was declared a "permanent installation" and by 1946, it became the home of the 1st Marine Division.

It was named after Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton (1860–1942), who had long advocated setting up a training base for the Marine Corps on the west coast. Today it is the home to myriad Operating Force units including the I Marine Expeditionary Force and various training commands.

Efforts today continue to preserve the rich heritage of Camp Pendleton's founders and the more than 230 years of Marine Corps history. The original ranch house is used for historical tours and has been declared a National Historic Site.

Some of the Base's streets and sites have been named in honor of military war heroes and battles. The geographic locations formally christened by Spanish explorers and missionaries continue that heritage. A ranch cattle brand, Pendleton's logo, can be seen throughout the Base.

Camp Pendleton's 125,547 acres host a self-sustaining water supply, sewage treatment plants, telephone and electrical systems. With a daytime population of more than 70,000 , Camp Pendleton must maintain its self-sustaining capabilities.

To help maintain the high demand on Pendleton's utilities, there are seven sewage treatment plants, 150 miles of sewer mainlines, 24 wells, 375 miles of water mainlines, 23 reservoirs, 145 miles of gas lines, 335 miles of electrical lines, 215 electric substations and two landfills.

Along with having its own utility distribution systems, Camp Pendleton also maintains 7,300 family housing units and is constructing additional units in conjunction with maintaining 18,000 permanent party billeting spaces. In addition, there are more than 2,600 buildings and structures. The largest structure on Base is the 6,000-foot runway at the Air Station.

Tank-On-Tank Combat: Destroying Hitler’s Panzer Division | Battle of the Bulge | Harry Miller - American Veterans Center

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=42tacO27He0

While growing up during the Depression, Harry Miller would watch with admiration as Civil War veterans marched in parades in his native Ohio. The sight inspired him lie about his age & join the military. When he applied for active duty, Miller was assigned to Ft. Knox, Kentucky where he joined a mechanized unit.

During WWII, Harry served with the 740th Tank Battalion as a tank crewman. On Oct. 29, 1944, Miller’s battalion departed England & arrived in France via Utah Beach. Seeing little combat at first, Miller feared he had missed most the action. That all changed on Dec 16, when German forces launched their last great offensive or World War II - The Battle of the Bulge.
