9/11: "The New York Volunteer" - The Brandos
YouTube ^ | 2006 | The Brandos

Originally a Revolutionary War era song that was later updated for the Civil War, the Brandos updated it once again in the wake of September 11, 2001:

The New York Volunteer

Lyrics:

We come from every foreign shore
We're from this native land
We're every culture and every creed
That are known to man
And on our streets, on any day
Every language will you hear
Yet when tragedy strikes we band as one
Like New York Volunteers
We take in stride the trouble and strife
Like New York Volunteers

We come from every walk of life
The poorest to the grand
And side by side that fateful day
We stood to bear a hand
And though to those from far away
Quite different we appear
Yes, we're black and tan, we're yellow and white
We're New York Volunteers
We take in stride the trouble and strife
Like New York Volunteers

Now, some will say the world is grim
And hope a distant dream
Humanity a world away
But if they'd only seen
Our citizens emerge that day
Their fellowman to cheer
Well, it's a different tale they'd have to tell
Of our New York Volunteers
We take in stride the trouble and strife
Like New York Volunteers

The Brandos are led by David Kincaid, who is not just a rocker, but a Civil War reenactor and music historian, who served as a consultant for the movie Gods and Generals.

He has an incredible stylistic range some of which can be seen here:

Gettysburg

Free and Green

The Keeper

Warrior's Son

My Father's Gun

Great band...did you have a chance to listen to any of the cuts? They came out with their first album which featured “Gettysburg” in ‘87, the year I started at Gettysburg College. I listened to them a lot, and got hooked. Unfortunately they were screwed around by a couple of US record companies and ended up signing with a German one...they’re much bigger in Europe than they are in the US, but Dave Kincaid still lives in the US so he can do his Civil War stuff :-)

The New York Volunteer

'Twas in the days of seventy-six
When freemen young and old
All fought for Independence then
Each hero brave and bold!
'Twas then the noble Stars and Stripes
In triumph did appear
And defended by brave patriots
The Yankee Volunteers
'Tis my delight to march and fight
Like a New York Volunteer!

Now, there's our City Regiments
Just see what they have done:
The first to offer to the State
To go to Washington
To protect the Federal Capital
And the flag they love so dear!
And they've done their duty nobly,
Like New York Volunteers!
'Tis my delight to march and fight
Like a New York Volunteer!

The Rebels out in Maryland
They madly raved and swore,
They'd let none of our Union troops
Pass through Baltimore
But the Massachusetts Regiment
No traitors did they fear
But fought their way to Washington
Like Yankee Volunteers!
'Tis my delight to march and fight
Like a New York Volunteer!

It doesn’t get much publicty sometimes, but New York too has had its share of national heroes. We saw some notable valor from men of New York again nine years ago.
