For the first time in the nation, gun makers and dealers are now liable for injuries or deaths caused by the criminal use of their weapons, under a landmark law signed yesterday by Mayor Bloomberg.
The law one of four bills signed regulating gun sales and possession goes further than any other city's effort to hold the gun industry financially responsible for crimes involving their weapons.
"We need to do everything we can to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and out of the hands of children," said Bloomberg. "There's just no argument here. Guns kill people, it's time to get them off the street."
City lawmakers took more than two years to hammer out the legislation, continuing

Does this law also allow people to sue General Motors when they get hit by a drunk driver in a Chevy?
So who makes the guns that the NYPD uses? They will probably stop doing business in and with the city to reduce their liability exposure.
There must an election coming up for the Mayor. This whore politician should be thrown out of the Republican party. IMO
Isn't NYC a bleeding heart liberal bastion anyways? I mean he is only scoring points with athe liberal clap trap. Now if this BS passed in Crawford, that would really be a story!
if someone sells you a used car that fails state inspection for a safety violation (they give you a bogus sticker lets say), and when you drive that car the wheel falls off and you kill someone with it - is the car dealer going to be held responsible for monetary damages? yes.
if a gun dealer sells someone with a criminal record a gun, having failed to perform the background check on that person, and they kill some 7-Eleven clerk with it - should that gun dealer be liable?
Thanks for the information. Much appreciated!
>> this only covers situations where the dealer fails to comply with some aspect of the law governing the sale <<
So the manufacture is punished for the dealer's mistake? Seems like yet another law trying to shutdown the gun industry.
Is there an exemption on Police weapons? What if a criminal was able to obtain a firearm from the police during a gun fight and committed a crime. I was not able to find any statistics but i have heard that it is quite common. If i was a manufacturer this would make me want to cease contracts with the NY city government. Does NYC sell its used weapons like many other cities do? If so, couldn't that make them liable as well?
IIRC, New York state is home to some gun manufacturing? But I guess the mayor thinks there's no current problem with industries leaving the state, so why not chase a few more away.

That is not what is being discussed here. He is talking about allowing duits to be brough even when all legal procedures have been followed.
If I remember correctly, NYPD issues Glocks, the Glock 19 is the model I think. Some carry a glock 26 for backup. I left NYC as they were changing over from revolvers to Glocks. Glad I left for the free state of Nevada.
People said Rudy was too liberal (and he was) but compared to this moron, Rudy might has well have been Ronald Reagan...
don't get me wrong, there is alot of room for misuse in this by rabid trial lawyers looking to sue everyone for damages. all I am saying is, that tonight when someone is killed someplace in NYC by a smith & wesson, that does not automatically mean smith & wesson is going to have to pay the victim's family.
Despite Bloomberg's assertion that there's no argument here, I'm going to argue anyway. In 34 years, I have yet to see a gun jump up out of a desk, walk down the street, and kill someone.
read the linked article, that's not what is says in the last paragraph. obviously, a blanket lawsuit provision ("anybody who gets shot sues glock") is not going to fly, its been tried.
Another example of driving production and supply offshore due to the high cost of serving a US Market by a US Producer. If any guns are still produced in the US (And I doubt many are) this type of unlimited liability will most certainly chase them away with the result that NY Police and other Law Enforcement will be forced to buy foreign.
And Gonzales wants to extend or effect a "assault weapons" ban. It's a helluva party this Republican party. /s
Bloomberg is a POS, but then he accurately reflects the values of most New Yorkers.
They fell prey to the "more rounds=more firepower" siren song. Here in ABQ the cops carry Glocks, but in .40 caliber, not 9mm.
Yep guns kill people just like penises rape women...
That's already illegal and I'm sure it opens that person up to civil liability as well.
