Poll: Majority of seniors support medical marijuana

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Nearly three-fourths of older Americans support legalizing marijuana for medical use, according to a poll done for the nation's largest advocacy group for seniors.

More than half of those questioned said they believe marijuana has medical benefits, while a larger majority agreed the drug is addictive.

AARP, with 35 million members, says it has no political position on medical marijuana and that its local branches have not chosen sides in the scores of state ballot initiatives on the issue in recent elections.

But with medical marijuana at the center of a Supreme Court case to be decided next year, and nearly a dozen states with medical marijuana laws on their books, AARP decided to study the issue.

"The use of medical marijuana applies to many older Americans who may benefit from cannabis," said Ed Dwyer, an editor at AARP The Magazine, which will discuss medical marijuana in its March/April issue appearing in late January.

Well, there are other narcotic drugs (fentanyls, for example) which are allowed for use, but, due to their nature, their medical application is permitted only under certain conditions of controls, record keeping and accountability. One could think that cannabinoids could be included in this system, right?

When the pharmaceutical companiea find a way to profit from medical marijuana, medical marijuana will be legal... and as popular as Viagra.

What is 'older'? Baby boomers? That would be about right. A bunch of old hippies still wanting to get high but now prefer legal acceptance. Jerks.

Let them take Marinol pills then. Time release capsuls give a more even dosage of THC in the bloodstream. Won't get you high, but of course that isn't the purpose of medical weed, and we all know that's what people want it for. Medical uses. ;-)

As a medical marijuana classified patient I can grow marijuana and choose to smoke, or bake with it. I prefer to bake with it. Lasts longer and offers more relief.

Ya know, after years of taking pharmaceuticals, sometimes individuals develop allergies - or worse, get really addicted and ruin relationoships such as marriage or losing jobs.

Marijuana usage, once adjusted, is used as an analgesic for many and as a relaxant for others .. Alcohol is a much worse problem that plagues America. Marijuana has been used for centuries, and there is even anecdotal evidence that Jesus was a Pothead (sic).. Just google "Jesus was a Pothead" and read up!

"As a medical marijuana classified patient ..."

Lemme guess. You use pot for pain. You were smoking pot way before you went to see your doctor to get a "recommendation". Nothing else works for your "condition".

robertpaulsen! How did you guess?

"One could think that cannabinoids could be included in this system, right?"

Not really.

Marijuana is classified as a Schedule I drug -- "no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States." Fentanyls are in Schedule II -- "a currently accepted medical use with severe restrictions."

If marijuana were ever recognized as having a medical use (right after the discovery that pigs can fly), I doubt it would go into Schedule II. Probably Schedule III or IV.

Awesome. Thanks for the info. I tend to be suspicious of the whole medical marijuana thing, as it's usually portrayed as a hippie endeavor to get high even when sick. Seems like bad medicine to me. But maybe not. And that would be awesome if Jesus was a pothead! Probably not though.

I'm two days late but still, you're right on. I think the very same...
Tail-end baby-boomers/seniors scared to go out to the seedier parts of town the old fashioned way. Afraid of getting their Buicks jacked. God forbid! Not after dark! Early-bird special ends at 6pm!!!
