It sounds like it. It would take a serious wuss to beat someone with a metal object and for them to only get away with scrapes and bruises.
It also has too many hokey references. A pickup truck? Two white males? He is looking to make the "stupid rednecks want to fight instead of talk" ploy.
If it did happen, I hope they jail whoever did it. But my bet is on that this is a staged event.
