WASHINGTON — Accusing politicians of "pounding their chests" on immigration for short-term political gain, Florida Gov. Jeb Bush said Tuesday that the tone of the debate had been "hurtful" to him and his Mexican-born wife, Columba.

Bush, the younger brother of President Bush, reserved some of his sharpest criticism for conservatives in his own Republican Party, calling it "just plain wrong" to charge illegal immigrants with a felony, as a provision passed by the Republican-led House would do. He also opposed "penalizing the children of illegal immigrants" by denying them U.S. citizenship, an idea backed by some conservatives but not included in the legislation.

"My wife came here legally, but it hurts her just as it hurts me when people give the perception that all immigrants are bad," the Florida governor wrote in an e-mail exchange with The Times.

Reagan did nothing to secure the borders against additional illegals. Will Bush and the current Congress?

It seems that a lot of frustration being expressed on this board is due to the inelibility of people to drop the notion that the US is some sort of sovereign entity with a distinct national identity and set of cultural values.

That may have been true during the first 200 years, and probably reached its highest point right after WWII, but those days are long gone. It appears the greatest resistance to the reality of the current situation is held by individuals who look back with certain fondness at those days of national unity.

No action on the part of Congress is the same as amnesty. The real driver isn't individual illegals, but their progeny. And no, Mildred, the 14th is not going to be overturned - these kids are US citizens.

It's sort of like the 5 stages of grief: many are still in the anger/depression stage. Once you get over those last stages and let go of the past, then you can become comfortable with the way things ARE.

Drop the emotion, get smart, and figure out a way to take advantage while the getting's good, otherwise you'll be left holding the bag with nothing to show for it.

I call nonsense wherever I see it.

Which is why I have responded to you so often on this thread.

I'm sorry he feels that way.

What I find hurtful is an ignorant clod like Jeb, can not distinguish between
LEGAL and ILLegal, serving as the elected governor of one of our states.

What hurts me is that Jeb is so functionally inarticulate as to not be able to frame this correctly.

It's all about crime not squishy feelings.

“Let’s be realistic. Our government bureaucrats simply cannot implement a program for 11 million illegal aliens."

Give the IRS something constructive to do after the Fair Tax is passed.

America, would we be in the hands of Patriots and not Internationalist Sell-Out Traitors, could be righted, in many ways, very quickly. Security and Fair, Constitutional Taxation are NOT too much to ask for!

Sure - you've "responded" to everything I've posted except to answer the question: Yes or No - do you want LEGAL immigration stopped?

Yes or No - do you want LEGAL immigration stopped?

I answered that long ago - I don't have a problem with legal immigration - in fact, my ex-wife was a legal immigrant.

Now, go play in the corner with your 7 or 8 responses from freepers who say they want legal immigration curbed.

Entitlement syndrome, and people wonder why we don't think the vast majority of illegals would vote republican. We already have enough people with that syndrome, we don't need to import any more.

IMHO the well to do Latinos and Mexicans who immigrate will vote Republican. But the huge masses of poor, illegal immigrant Mexicans and Central America will vote Democrat if they get amnesty, become citizens and their American born children will vote Democrat

Mexico sends us the most legal immigrants

Yearly legal immigration:
The 10 countries of origin were Mexico (116,000), India (50,000), the Philippines (45,000), China (41,000), El Salvador (28,000), the Dominican Republic (26,000), Vietnam (22,000), Colombia (15,000), Guatemala (14,000), and Russia (14,000).

I'm going to start clicking "Report Abuse" on all posts that call our President a traitor. I hope there's some action on this. I cannot think of anything worse than calling the President a traitor other than some sort of threat against him.

So, to paraphrase Voltaire, even though you may not agree with someone's opinion, you will defend to the death your right not to see it?

How unAmerican is that?

BLAH BLAH BLAH. Eight or so responses from a vanity you posted to troll for those responses. Yep, that shows that the entire anti-illegal-immigration movement is against legal immigration as well.

You ought to call Gallup - they could use someone with your skills (or lack thereof) as a pollster.

That is not a "yes" or "no" - as someone claimed above, you can be for stopping all LEGAL immigration but have no problem with legal immigrants - don't worry, I won't expect you to actually answer the question ; )

Well, maybe I will not alone, but since MineralMan's "talking point" is "clouding 'treason' with 'traitor'" and sinkspur has a different talking point, etc., pretty soon we will prevail.

These kinds of visas will be the "baby thrown out with the bathwater" if people don't calm down and learn all they can about the current immigration legislation. We need to let the best and brightest come here, but they're bound to get lumped in with farm workers because the debate is being spun out of control. "By whom?" is a very relevant question.

There is way too much emotion in this debate, and now the focus is shifting to the behaviour of children in junior and high schools. I'd like to know who organized these children so well, and where did they get flags and printed banners in such short order? It is like the "cartoon Muslims" who pulled regulation Danish flags out of thin air...somebody or some entity wants mayhem in the streets of the U.S. and we shouldn't give it to them.

I answered it, pinhead - I am not opposed to illegal immigration and think it has a purpose if done in a planned manner. I do not think it should be used to keep down wages of American workers.
