Mary Cheney's pregnancy affects us all
Townhall ^ | 12/07/2006 | Janice Shaw Crouse

Mary Cheney’s pregnancy poses problems not just for her child, but also for all Americans. Her action repudiates traditional values and sets an appalling example for young people at a time when father absence is the most pressing social problem facing the nation. With 37 percent of American children born to fatherless families, Mary Cheney is contributing to a trend that is detrimental to all Americans who will live with the ramifications of millions of children whose anger and frustration at not knowing their father will be felt in the public schools and communities of our nation.

Mary Cheney is among that burgeoning group of adult women over age 20 that are driving the trend of women who don’t want a man in the picture, but want to have a baby. These older women are pushing out-of-wedlock birth statistics higher and higher. At a time when teen births and teen abortions are declining dramatically, older women are having more un-wed births and more abortions, including repeat abortions (indicating that they are using abortion as birth control).

Well-educated, professional Mary Cheney is flying in the face of the accumulated wisdom of the top experts who agree that the very best family structure for a child’s well-being is a married mom and dad family. Her child will have all the material advantages it will need, but it will still encounter the emotional devastation common to children without fathers.

One Georgia high school principal reported, “We have too many young men and women from single-mother families that don’t have the role models at home to teach them how to deal with adversity and handle responsibility. They’ve seen their mom work 60 hours a week just to put food on the table; they end up fending for themselves.”

When fatherless children get to be teens, the girls tend to start looking for love in all the wrong places and the boys tend to find as their role model the bad-boy celebrities of MTV, NFL and NBA.

As they grow older, fatherless children tend to have trouble dealing with male authority figures. Too often children in single-mother households end up angry at their absent fathers and resentful of the mother who has had to be a father figure, too. Typically, the boys who have a love-hate relationship with their mother end up hating all women. Numerous of them look for vulnerable women where they can act out their anger and be in control.

Mary Cheney’s action sets an example that is detrimental for mothers with less financial resources who will start down an irrevocable path into poverty that tends to be generational –– children in households without a father tend to themselves have unwed births later in life. Experts from both the left and the right cite a disastrous litany of negative outcomes that are predictable when a child grows up in a fatherless family. Such children tend to get involved in drugs, alcohol abuse, and delinquency; they tend to drop out of school and have teen pregnancies. An assistant principal in a Junior High School said that many of the behavioral problems that teachers face in the classroom stem from households without a father’s influence.

Mary’s pregnancy is an “in-your-face” action countering the Bush Administration’s pro-family, pro-marriage and pro-life policies. She continues to repudiate the work to which her father has devoted his life. Mary has repeatedly said that “studies” show that children only need a loving home. Her statement is incomplete because the experts agree that for the well-being of children, they desperately need a married father and a mother.

All those people who talk about doing what is best “for our children” need to get back to the basics: children need a married mom and dad. Children can do without a lot of the trimmings of childhood, but nothing can replace a home where the mother and dad love each other enough to commit for a lifetime and are absolutely crazy about their kids –– enough to be willing to sacrifice their own needs to see that their children get the very best.

I guess you're not familiar with linda_22003's posting history. I am. Consistently cheerleading for the homosexual agenda and abortion, while pretending to be "values neutral". When presented with her position, she invariably claims not to be promoting what she just promoted.

Linda, you're transparent and deceitful. You pretend not to support what is clear that you support. You really don't fool many on FR, if they've read a few of your comments.

Linda, I'm finding your comments in favor of small government interesting here. Your position is that Mary Cheney's decision to use sperm from a presumably anonymous donor to have herself impregnated and raise her child together with her lesbian lover is none of our business. You also seem to hold the position that people should make these decisions free from not only government control but also from any open criticism.

So, I'm curious as to why you've made it your business to appear on homeschooling threads periodically to criticize us for our decision not to send our children to school. You become so indignant about the grammar in internet posts, yet a woman purposely having herself impregnated so that she can raise a child without the biological father is beyond reproach to you. Interesting.

"They aren't teaching about Mary Cheney having a baby in the public schools."

No, not Mary Cheney. Just telling kids in many schools that "there are many kinds of families - two dads, two moms, one mom, and then the weirdos, a mom and a dad. All it takes is love, they're all equal (except the noble homosexuals are the best since they're victims of oppression)".

when society is forced to change diapers I might agree, but we haven't been asked to do anything so it is none of our business

What does it include?

I think a better question would be "what does it exclude.....

....you'll have to forgive us linda, but we have a right to express dismay regarding some of the negative influences pervading American society.......and while it may seem trivial to you, history teaches otherwise.

I referred to Rome for a reason: the path to decadence is littered with corpses.

Gladitorial contests, violence as sport, sexual depravity, the hallmarks of a bored fat, gluttonous society.....a declining society at that.

You and your friends take aim at Christians all the while Muslims around the world are mobilizing to kill us.

...and we have folks filing briefs because he doesn't like the sound of church bells. The level of stupidity is astounding.

Some are leftist trolls, there have always been a goodly number of homosexual activists that troll FR. In fact, there are homosexual agenda websites that give advice how to sign on to FR and pretend to be a pro-gay conservative. Very likely some are on this thread.

And then there are the libertines who like the idea of a sexual free-for-all culture.

You don't see how intentionally bringing a child into the world without a father is a problem?

Depends on the situation. With the Cheney's resources, I don't see a problem.

>>>So fathers are nothing, all that is needed to raise children properly is loads of money. That's an interesting value system.

Now a question for you. Since it seems you believe they are laughing at us, and therefore perceive us as vulnerable, what do you propose be done about it?

Not a lot we can do about it. We are a free society and therefor people are free to make selfish bizarre choices. The only thing that can be done is make sure it is clear to them that aggressive moves by their governments or its terror puppets will be met with extreme and swift reaction. Of course, after the Gates testimony, they'd laugh at that too.

So you are basically asking is 'what do we do once we are past the point of no return'. I have no good answer to that question.

Linda appears on many of the homosexual agenda threads to cheerlead homosexuality while pretending to be neutral, same thing for abortion. She's a troll. Didn't know she slams home schooling too; that's three for three.

I don't think I've ever said that people shouldn't homeschool. Can you refer me to posts where I have said so? I have sometimes noted people's grammar and spelling as examples NOT to follow if teaching, but I know I have never said that people should be prevented from homeschooling, whatever my own opinion of it may be.

I agree that the ideal family is a mother and a father for a child, preferably married. However, I don't see how having Mary Cheney marry a man she has no interest in to form a traditional family would be of benefit to anyone. You can criticize if you wish, but really, what difference does it make?

And I don't see the premise of the thread at all, that Mary Cheney's pregnancy somehow harms us all. If that were true, you would think we would have heard from Dan Quayle by now - he was quite critical of a fictional character getting pregnant out of wedlock, now here's a real life example in his own party.

Do I think two mommies are optimal? In the big picture, it's not the best model. But I think this is a pretty solid family, and the baby born into it will be well provided for, both materially and emotionally.

I would like to think that some of these responses were made in opposition to "Big Brother" sticking his nose on our bedrooms.

But when you consider that Mary Cheny has an agenda. One that includes gay marriages, gays adopting children, special rights for gays, then on to abortion rights, abandoning the WOD, Cutting and Running, and even going panty-less in limo's...

Well the point is that Mary Cheney's baby DOES affect us all.
