When she says (I assume) that essentially it is treating someone on the basis of the color of their skin, ask her what is the defining feature of “black history month.” She'll probably protest and say “that's different.” Then ask her about Japanese and Italian internment during WWII, plus the racial laws preventing Asian and Southern European immigration, and ask whether we should have Japanese History Month, or Italian History Month. She'll probably go to slavery, or she may point out that there are only 12 months. If the former, you've got a few different routes to take, if the says the latter, agree with her, and say, along the lines of Dr. King, “wouldn't it be better if we judged on the content of character, rather than color of skin?”

That raises a very interesting issue, fb. If only Blacks deserve their own month because only Blacks suffered slavery, then why is it that affirmative action automatically applies to everyone who isn't a heterosexual white male? Were white women slaves? Were white male homosexuals slaves?

Actually, I wouldn't mind affirmative action if it were still a unique program for the benefit of the one people who had the unique experience of slavery, but it isn't. Right now aliens from Outer Gazebo could land and, so long as they weren't white male heterosexuals, be automatically qualified for affirmative action based on their "otherness."
