I'm looking for something that would definitively tie her to Mombasa. If it was merely to fly home, Nairobi is the capitol city and a whole lot closer to the ancestral village, so why not Nairobi?
Mombasa was the capitol in 1961. I suspect it's also where the international airport happened to be, for that very reason...
