I've been looking at some old newspapers and there is a reference to the republic of Kenya in the Nevada Journal June, 1964 and here is one from this Oswego, NY newspaper from Nov. 1963-

I wish I knew a way to trace back the history of all these websites quoting each other about the "Dominion of Kenya" versus "Republic of Kenya" matter. Well, I'm trying using Google advanced search to look for "Dominion of Kenya" year by year starting with Jan 1, 1990 to Jan 1, 1991, and so forth.

Okay, here are my results:

1. August 24, 2003. (www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Kenya) The actual page no longer has that reference nor even any reference to "Dominion."
2. October 21, 2003. (www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Westminster-System) "Dominion of Kenya" as hyperlink is listed as a "former country" under the Westminster-System. Clicking on the link connects to the page above in 1. with the following: "This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding reliable references. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. (July 2007)." Holding the cursor over the hypertext, though, opens a small window which says: "Motto Harambee(Swahili) Let us all pull together Anthem Ee Mungu Nguvu Yetu O God of All Creation Capital (and largest city) Nairobi Official languages Swahili (since 1963), English[1] Demonym Kenyan Government Republic - President Mwai Kibaki - Vice President Moody Awori Independence from the United Kingdom - Date December 12, 1963..." In view source there is this that is not visible on the page: "The Dominion of Kenya between 1963 and 1964." This "Dominion of Kenya" is also hyperlinked to 1. above.
2004: October 3, The Astute Bloggers: A piece from within the past 48 hours refers to 12 Dec, 1963 to 12 Dec, 1964 as "Dominion of Kenya" with the Queen of England as being the "incumbent" and has a hypertext link to a list of dates at www.statemaster.com/encyclopedia/December-12 within which is "1963 - Kenya gains its independence from the United Kingdom." The hypertext for "Kenya" links to www.statemaster,com/state/KE which is blank.

2005: Six hits, some of which are recent. Some of them are obviously reworded versions of 2004.

2006: Two hits
1. April 28, 2006. Waldo's Virginia Political Blogroll that appears to be quoting an earlier online source and refers the reader to a Wikipedia article which has a similar appearance to www.statemaster.com but now lists as head of state for "Dominion of Kenya" as Kenyatta for the 1963-1964 period instead of Queen Elizabeth. This page gives no source but has the similar hyperlink for a December 12 date as the www.nationmaster in 2003 above but which links to another Wikipedia page about Kenya that says nothing about "Dominion of Kenya."
2. November 13, 2006. African Affairs. What appears to be a scholarly journal link to a PDF (http://afraf.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/reprint/48/191/89.pdf) that is taking too stinking long to download.
2007: One hit: http://tripatlas.com/Westminster_system. This is a reworking of 2. in 2003 above, the hyperlink of "The Dominion of Kenya between 1963 and 1964" connects to tripatlas.com/kenya which looks similar enough in content and layout (but with different fonts and background) to the Wikipedia article about Kenya to get a kid in school busted for plagiarism. For example:

2008: 10 hits, some of them very recent that reference this, most appear to be rehashes of previous web pieces. Some, like the Huffington Post, are already referencing "birthers." One of links is to the paper of that pdf mentioned above but available now through JSTOR. It is an article published in 1949 which I had found and referenced earlier in this thread and has nothing to do with the 1963-1964 period.

2009: >291 hits. Most are simply repeating what some of these others, without any support, have said earlier.

Bottom line: Combine this with what you've found from pre-internet news sources and we can see how people are simply repeating something that others found on the internet that appeared only a relatively short time ago with no supporting references at all. Most of the hits for this year are from people using the earlier, unsupported, references to prove that the Kenyan birth certificate cannot be real because of "Republic of Kenya." Your newspaper articles show otherwise.

But even better is the 1963 Kenyan Constitution. Here's how it begins (emphasis added):

CHAPTER I- THE REPUBLIC OF KENYA

Article 1

Kenya is a sovereign Republic.

Article 1A

The Republic of Kenya shall be a multiparty democratic state.

Article 2

The Public Seal of Kenya shall be such device as may be prescribed by or under an Act of Parliament.

Article 2A

(Repeated by 12 of 1991, s. 2).

Article 3

This Constitution is the Constitution of the Republic of Kenya and shall have the force of law throughout Kenya and, subject to section 47, if any other law is inconsistent with this Constitution, this Constitution shall prevail and the other law shall, to the extent of the inconsistency, be void.

Hi Aruanan!!! Congratulations, you are the 342 freeper to link a 1998 modern, amended version of the Kenyan constitution and misrepresent it as being the 1963 one. BZZZZZT

Debunked for the umpteenth time. The 1963 does not call Kenya a republic anywhere. The head of state is the Queen of England, not a republic.

Not better, worse. Yours is the amended Constitution. The original 1963 Constitution has over a hundred pages, but no mention of the word Republic.
