More like the tides of Katrina. In fact, the only difference I see between these folks and the Katrina ...ahem...cough-cough... “victims” is that they’re wearing hoodies instead of tank tops.
I wonder if they know yet that the ones getting the big money out of this little pigfest are the “administrators” of the give-away?

Funny how they say they are poor and yet they can afford to go to fast food places instead of cooking in and they are very much overweight.

I wonder if those who went without pie have figured out that their brutha, ostammer, isn’t going to come through with the steady mortgage payments and the full gas tanks.
I’m surprised nobody was trampled to death like at that Wal-Mart last Christmas when they showed up well before dawn for a big sale.
I’m not a Detroiter, but I have 2 UM degrees, married a guy from the area, and still have Michigan connections.
I know the first response of most FReepers is that these are all freeloaders looking for a handout. The fact that most of them are black will reinforce that idea with many of our more narrow-minded FRiends. I just wanted to say a few things:
1) If I recall correctly, most whites left Detroit after the riots. I wouldn’t expect to see a lot of whites signing up for a program for Detroit residents. People aren’t bad, scamming, shiftless, or whatever just because they’re black.
2) There are many hard-working, lower/working class black people. In a downturn, dare I say ‘women and minorities hit hardest’? It’s just the way it is in many places. For many blacks, when they bought houses, they bought in black neighborhoods (sometimes they had to due to redlining) and these areas didn’t appreciate much. We all know the state of Detroit real estate. This folks probably cannot refinance or even if they own their home outright, they probably can’t borrow against it. They can’t sell and they can’t move. This is not a black problem, this is happening all over.
Picture #2 shows an elderly man trying to get through the doors. I cannot imagine my late stepfather or any of the hardworking elderly black people I know to be brought so low that they have to stand in line with 50,000 people, try not to be trampled, so they can save their home. It is heartbreaking.
I’m normally a hard-hearted, make the leeches work, kinda person. Anyone in this line who is trying to scam the system needs to be shot; I’ll be happy to do the shooting. But this just looks terrible to me and if the business news folks are right and we are heading into the 2nd wave of the recession, I’m afraid that we are going to see a lot more displays such as this, and the participants won’t all be black, either.

Only in America could they say they are poor and yet be so fat, imagine them going over to say Africa and telling the poor over there that they have no money .

I wonder if they line up like that for jobs when a company announces a hiring plan? Ya’ think? But I wonder how many of them already have jobs, like at ACORN, for instance.

This was like a joke on them, really. Yesterday there was a headline saying stimulus money was going to be handed out.
But that wasn’t accurate, lol!
This would have been a good chance to take some felons off the street. As they gave their names, if they’d had the cops set up there they could have run each ‘applicant’ for warrants. Now THAT would really be funny.
And all those grossly overweight needy, “homeless” people? How much are they costing the medical system? I saw many there who look like they could put quite a financial strain on the system all on their own.
Not ‘shrimp’. The word is ‘scrimps.’
Nothing bodes well for Detroit, lol! All the people who work and pay taxes left long ago.
And you know what - the fat slob “poor” pictured here WON’T be denied medical care if the left gets their way, while anyone who is a productive citizen that is 10% over “ideal” will just have to lose that weight before getting their broken arm fixed.
