And Now, What's your Scotch?

Posted on 10/21/2009 6:34:53 PM PDT by Sax

I'm not saying this is the way it should go, but for me, it went bourbon as a young man, irish whisky as the taste developed, and then nestled into the scotch as the palate matured and settled down to a sipping type restraint.

Glenmorangie as the everyday benchmark, Laiphroaig for the smoky flavor, and Lagavulin for the best of that.

I do believe that taste is Scotch has a bit of genetic play. There's something about the taste of Glenlivet that no other single malt can match for me. Oh sure, MacCallan 18 is smooth as silk, but it does not have the complexity, nose or flavor of the Glenlivet 12 (to me, anyway).

Slangevar!

Gotta go with “Famous Grouse” for everyday all around taste, and “Johnny Blue” for special occasions!

Glenlivet 12 is just fine - neat or with water. Glenfidich good neat, but don’t like it with water. Older single malts I’ve occasionally tried aren’t wotrh it for me. De gustibus non disputandum est.

Still looking for my scotch:

The Case (or 31 of them) of the Missing Whisky

The British Revenue & Customs people are convinced a shipment of 186 bottles of a rare cask of Highland Park Scotch whisky left Glasgow Airport as scheduled.

What they don't know is what happened to it.

The shipment, valued at $240,000US, was aboard a Delta Airlines flight bound for Los Angeles, intended to be delivered to Saybrex International, a Beverly Hills spirits company. The 32-year-old whisky is rated as one of the top single malts in the world.

“We are shocked and outraged that 31 cases of alcohol weighing some 800 pounds can just disappear while in the care of Delta and various governmental agencies,” said Ari Bussel, Saybrex International's vice president of operations.

Johnny Walker Blue,(yes, it is worth the price), Crown Royal Special Reserve, Chivas Regal are my top three, but I'd certainly not turn down a chance to quaff any of the myriad elixirs mentioned here.

Finally a fun thread.

At home, my standard is Glenlivet 12yo.

Fortunately, I've found a couple good whiskey bars on my travels. Unfortunately, the price of a good whiskey at a bar in Sweden is outrageous...and it's sold by the centiliter (watch out for that!).

Others I've liked: Glenmorangie Port Wood, Glendronach 12yo and 15yo, Glegoyne 17yo, Glengoyne 12yo Cask Strength (!!!), Edradour 10yo, Aberlour Abundh. The most surprising find was a Japanese whiskey: Suntory Hibiki...excellent.

But now I’m working on a bottle of Glenlivet 15yo Oak Reserve

Of course, a good Makers Mark Manhattan is excellent when the weather starts turning cold.

Like port ellen, and particularly liked DL/Prov sherry cask bottle I had a while back (was like ~18yo)

Like most of what ardbeg I have tried, though have not tried a new bottling in years. the dl/omc bottlings from the early 70s that I have tried are among the best whiskies I have ever had.

have had some absolutely fantastic single=cask caol ila bottlings from Binny’s in chicago. Their spirits man (brett) apparently has excellent taste. He also had a single-cask laphroaig that wasn’t the love it or hate it taste but was absolutely 5-star. I liked all his casks better than OB’s.

i really liked the medicinal taste laphroaig used to have, haven’t found that in more recent younger bottlings.

lagavulin still great, would have liked to have been able to try more independent bottlings, they apparently have controlled supply a long time.

Never much liked the bowmore I have tried, for whatever reason. maybe just bad luck.
