CS Lewis said that he felt that atheists maybe closer to God than many others who never take a position either way. Atheists at least adhere to reason and reason is a step in God’s direction.

Saying that "atheists at least adhere to reason" is about as true as saying that "blondes at least are beautiful."

I’m sure I join many in hoping he is in for a glorious, glorious surprise.

Eternity holds no surprises. One either curses God or humbly accepts His free gift of eternal life. Like many on FR, I've been holding out hope that Chris, particularly in light of his illness, would see the light. I see no evidence of his repentance, but who among us can know his final thoughts?

Here's hoping we'll one day encounter a redeemed Christopher Hitchens in eternity....

Hitchens was an atheist. They don't get into Heaven.

Are you the one who gets to decide, or is it somebody else?

I agree. None of us have the authority to place final judgment on Mr. Hitchens. We know the truth about someone who dies in their sins. We don't know if Mr. Hitchens repented at some point, and even if he didn't, it's pretty crass to point it out at this point. One can stand for the truth without intentionally trying to offend. I think that's what is meant by being all things to all people (1 Corinthians 9:19-23). Finally, I hope and pray Mr. Hitchens DID repent, because I'd rather all be saved.

Hitchens was confrontational, opinionated and he enjoyed upsetting traditional values and beliefs. He understood the dangerous nature of Islam and supported Bush in the WOT. Which is more then can be said for many lefties. In recent years Hitcehns shtick became tedious and boring. Still, RIP.

“Hitchens was an atheist. They don’t get into Heaven.”

Why not?
My Bible doesn’t teach that people who believe themselves to be smarter or better than God are invited to spend eternity with Him.

He doesn't *know* it; still, it's better odds than the *Minnesota* Vikings winning any more games this year.

Sorry Hitchens died, and of cancer; I pray he repented -- remember the thief on the cross. God is not too proud to accept deathbed conversions.

We are all poorer for his passing. I didn’t always agree with his writings, but he did have a talent for the written word. I hope he found peace.

Always admired someone who was intellectually honest and not hypocritical. He had no problem criticizing people like Maher who bash Christianity but kowtow to Islam.Never quite understood his problem with Mother Theresa. Best comment once made that if Theresa were still alive she probably would have nursed him in his terminal stages.

Having spent over 2 decades caring for people on their deathbed, many of them atheists and a few agnostics, deathbed confessions are not nearly as common as some people would like to believe. It makes the survivors feel better. Every time I had one of those situations I had to deal with family asking what was going to happen to them. That is not a position anyone wants to be in.

My father was an atheist and proudly remained one on his deathbed, my uncle was cursing and going on about God not existing as his final words.

I suspect Hitchens was a lot like my uncle.

Lord, he was as imperfect as all of us. Show him Your mercy and invite him into the Kingdom he so long denied to himself. R.I.P., Hitchens.

"But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: for men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away, for his name is Obama."

One of the finest writers that ever wrote.

Commie bastard.

We're sorry to see ya go.

The man had a talent worthy of respect and admiration.
