Romney's cause is to serve his religion, and that is the role that the United States plays in his cause, America's value to Mitt Romney is based on it's usefulness to Mormonism.
Romney has no interests outside of Mormonism, that is why although he is a career politician, no one knows what his politics are, what his political interests are, or why he has spent 20 years running for office.

To take the simplest explanation, I’d say the reason he has been in politics for 20 years (and his interest outside Mormonism) is that he enjoys the personal gain derived from political power.
These kinds of politicians can be used to advance the political interests of of any group which at the time of his election has a powerful momentum among the general populace.
