The Civil War movie 'every conservative needs to see' (Copperhead)
Politico ^ | July 29, 2013 | Patrick Gavin

Conservatives are grabbing popcorn and lining up to catch a new historical drama with modern connections.

“Copperhead,” the new film from director Ron Maxwell, focuses on the Northern opponents of the American Civil War and stars Billy Campbell, Angus MacFadyen and Peter Fonda.

At least one conservative — Richard Viguerie, chairman of ConservativeHQ.com — emailed his audience to tell it about the movie “that every conservative needs to see.”

“[W]hile Copperhead is about the Civil War, believe me, it will hit close to home for every conservative fighting to preserve our Constitution and our American way of life,” Viguerie wrote. “Because Copperhead is about standing up for faith, for America, and for what’s right, just like you and I are doing today. In fact, I’ve never seen a movie with more references to the Constitution, or a movie that better sums up our current fight to stand up for American values and get our nation back on track.”

The movie, which is based on the novel by Harold Frederic, follows Abner Beech, a New York farmer who doesn’t consider himself a Yankee, and is against slavery and war in general.

Asked about whether he sees his film as conservative, Maxwell told POLITICO, “I think if ‘Copperhead’ has any relevance at all, in addition to illuminating a time and place from our common heritage, it’s as a cinematic meditation on the price of dissent. I’ve never thought of dissent as a political act belonging to the right or left. It’s an act of liberty, expression of the rights of a free person — free not just in law but free from the confines and pressures of the tyranny of the majority.”

Maxwell said while the concept of dissent is as “old as time,” in the U.S., “it’s protected in the Constitution.”

If you think about it, the better solution is to EXPELL the NE states from Maryland to Maine, including WDC, & Kalifornia. Move the new capitol to the center of the country where it should be. That would give the US a clear conservative majority. Remaining liberal states would see the Federal payoffs to the states dry up, forcing them to either be productive & prudent, or starve.

--------------------

Under this strategy, you would probably also have to expel the entire West Coast. Those states, particularly California, are as Blue as the Northest corridor.

There were abolitionists who opposed the war because they felt that war would not solve the issue of slavery.

And looking at things the way they are today, one would have to admit they were right, at least in the long-term.

Lincoln won an absolute majority in enough northern states to give him the Electoral College.

Solved the issue of slavery. Did not solve the much bigger issue of how white people and black can live together harmoniously in a democratic society.

Really? We are now all slaves to the ruling class and their drones despite the sham of elections.

I just examined the data: Even if Lincoln had lost California [4], New Jersey [7], and Oregon [3] (states where he had less than 50% of the popular vote, but won a plurality), he still would have won the total electoral vote.

The Hurlburt book certainly could fulfill Hollywood’s current proclivities toward violence and gore.

I agree. I think some conservatives need to see Lincoln taken down a peg.

If the war ended discrimination why did it continue well into the 1960s?

I’m a one-note because widespread Southern opposition to the Confederacy is a huge note which complicates efforts to fit the Civil War situation to current affairs. Too many Southerners have been fed the myth of the Lost Cause by public schools over the years.

One reason to oppose a direct popular vote for President.

And were punished unduly via reconstruction.

Here's a clue: don't assassinate our president.

Washington is dominated by Seattle, but eastern WA is conservative. Can't say about Oregon, but I'll bet the attitude in Eugene doesn't describe the rest of the state.

As I said, When the federal trough dries up, liberal states will be forced to survive on their own. As it stands now, productive states are propping up welfare states. Without bribes, er, entitlements, the Liberals have nothing to offer. Without Federal money, States like Michigan & Illinois would collapse under the weight of unemployment & welfare. Their political influence will decline with their wealth. The ponzi scheme will end at the state line.

One of the beauties of our original republic was that states were free to succeed or fail on their own. This encouraged prudence & initiative for each state. Our present redistributive federal system encourages waste, mismanagement, & corruption, as it is always someone else’s money, unearned & undeserved.

Once this country is rid of HUD, HHS, IRS, income tax, etc., & tens of thousands of Federal bureaucrats, conservative states will thrive & liberal states will look like Detroit. The Liberals will starve themselves to death, enterprising conservatives will fill the void, leaving a free & wildly prosperous USA.

NORTH CAROLINA sent 127,000 CONFEDERATE SOLDIERS to fight for the Confederacy and lost 40,375 of her brave sons, double the loss of any other state.

FIRST AT BETHEL

FOREMOST AT GETTYSBURG

FURTHEST AT CHICKAMAUGA

LAST AT APPOMATTOX

North Carolina
To the eternal glory of the North Carolina
soldiers. Who on this battlefield displayed
heroism unsurpassed sacrificing all in sup-
port of their cause. Their valorous deeds
will be enshrined in the hearts of men long
after these transient memorials have crum-
bled into dust.

Thirty two North Carolina regiments were in
action at Gettysburg July 1,2,3, 1863. One Con-
federate soldier in every four who fell here
was a North Carolinian.

Origin of “The Tar Heels”

North Carolina soldiers taunted their Virginian compatriots that General Robert E. Lee was going to put tar on their heels to make them stick better; to which Lee responded,

“God bless the Tar Heel boys!”

Where did I say the war ended discrimination? It ended slavery.

The rest of my comment stated pretty clearly that I do not believe it solved the problem of how whites and blacks can live together harmoniously. Discrimination was a failed attempt to solve this problem, and our present attempts at equality and affirmative action aren’t working out perfectly either.

Unfortunately, the notion that red states subsidize blue states doesn't stand up to analysis.

On average, blue states pay in more than they get back, red states the reverse.

Not so different than FDR’s embargo on Japan which pushed them into attacking Pearl Harbor. But nobody made them attack Pearl Harbor any more than anybody made the south fire on Ft. Sumter.
