Driving Ukrainians Into Putin’s Arms
NYT opinions ^ | DEC. 8, 2014 | Lev Golinkin

Posted on 12/08/2014 10:19:25 PM PST by wetphoenix

A RECENT United Nations report says that nearly half a million Ukrainians have fled the country since April. The fact that families run from a war zone is heartbreaking but hardly unexpected. The disturbing part lies in the details — of the roughly 454,000 people who had fled Ukraine by the end of October, more than 387,000 went to Russia. Most of those who fled were Russian speakers from the east, but this still raises a sobering question: If this is a conflict between Ukraine and Russia, why did so many Ukrainians choose to cast their lot with the enemy?

Moscow’s denials of involvement in eastern Ukraine are, of course, absurd: It is clear that the separatists in Donetsk and Luhansk are equipped, reinforced and trained by Russians. That said, if Vladimir V. Putin had tried sending unmarked commandos to set up sham republics in western Ukraine, where anti-Russian sentiment runs high, his men would have been returned to the Kremlin in body bags. Yes, Mr. Putin is brewing unrest in the east, but he is brewing with local ingredients. He is connecting with the population using a language they speak and a symbolism they understand.

The unpalatable reality is that a significant portion of eastern Ukrainians — the very people on the ground living and suffering through this conflict — distrust Kiev and the West and at least tacitly support Russia and the separatists. And frankly, that isn’t surprising.

During communist period there were American ex-pats in Russia and Cuba cutting similar pieces in reverse for Pravda on how crappy it is to live in the West. This one is written by the same type of person, it has some truths and half-truths but the entire message is quite perverted.
It is stupid to say there are no ills accompanying Russian transition to free market but to say they are prevalent is about as correct as to say that the United States is a nation of racism and Wall Street oligarchs have stolen American dream from general population.
There are might be some truths to it but the entire picture is very different for a ‘half-full glass’ people.

Black nationalists talk of strength by killing whites, Germans had the same self divisive concept of strength by attack German Jews, however the practicers of such Orwellianisms are not foreign to Russia which practices similar hate of Ukrainians or Poles, or accross class warfare.

The Western leftist is more a recipient of a craft exported from Russia, built like a vicious little dog, vicious enough for America domestically but of no Strategic concern for Russia.

NATO would never adventure to conquer Russia or Ukraine like Napoleon or Hitler, it is ridiculous to think so - but use these only as protective resistance buffer zones completely frustrating Putin’s Soviet ambitions.

Russia wants to remove the minimum of European autodefense and resistance, while it is building offensive capabilities with long range crafts solely useful for expeditionary purposes and not home defense.

Before the Ukraine “story” became news worthy the US had long been putting together a Propaganda Campaign for they recognized Russia's Propaganda Machine would fast come into play. The idea was very simple....Blame Russia for everything which of course played out just as that....

...It was truly remarkable watching all the media reports mirror each other almost identical....I spotted it quickly this time around as the tactics and mouth pieces were so much like how the media reported regarding Egypt and the Muslim Brotherhood. The US was supporting the Muslim Brotherhood directly and indirectly....which we saw early on BEFORE it became active on US media.

So likewise the “Blame Russia” Campaign worked and is still working today. Actually Russia has put Sputnik up as a news source...have you seen it yet? Apparently to offset the US Propaganda Machine working in full force.

Interesting is also is the recent “story “ on Amnesty...that Obama actually "didn't sign" an agreement though it was certainly the story running.....once again the media and this Administration played deceptive games to accomplish their purpose which was manipulating Congress and the public.....apparently BO does not have his signature on anything at all regarding this.

Ferguson and these marches are yet again crating the chaos (cover) to distacr and occupy people.

My point of course is the US and Russia both have Propaganda Machines working in each country ‘to deceive their people’ and on the International Stage to deceive the nations.

It's not a Cold War at all....it's a very HOT and active communication and high tech war....both shaping public opinion and creating movements on the ground to promote their positions.

Recent Chechnya Hotel burning etc....we had people on the ground.

Nato and Russia....which of course is the US.... and Russia are simply raising the stakes and one upping each other. US just showed Russia in Chechnya they can hit them just like they blamed Russia for doing so in Crimea..... The problem is you have two super powers duking it on a world stage using/abusing other countries like Pawns on a cchess board.....one or the other will eventually make a serious move that will set off more than just a conflict.

When you pit a former KGB against a Street Thug....neither is going to bend to the other.

The Russian “rebels” needed supplies. Looting the dead on that Malaysian Air flight they shot down only went so far.

Yep. Russian version of Voice of America, allegedly banned in Russia, for example featuring a story like ‘Russian plane delivering attack helicopters and ammunition to Chad forced landed and seized by Nigerian authorities’. It takes some efforts to find out through the article that the plane is not Russian, but Russian-built manned by a French-speaking crew and it was delivering French weapons from Europe.

It is just one of many examples like that.

Let me understand you and Caww's position clearly:

Do you both claim that the United States is in control of Al-Qaeda affiliated terrorist organizations in Russia and launched a terror attack?

No, the message is indeed very different but it seems like you won’t ever comprehend it.
But it won’t be incorrect to say that Al-Qaeda and its affiliates wouldn’t be on a march around the world if not for a certain people, including people involved in US foreign policymaking.

Poroshenko rewarding Ukrainian passport to notorious Belarusian neo-Nazi leader Sergey Korotkikh from Belarusa Serhiy Korotkykh....of the "Azov" battalion....Poroshenko stated..."our best warriors and volunteers, who have demonstrated that they love Ukraine in Russian, Belarusian, English or any other language not less than in the Ukrainian one, who are ready to sacrifice their lives for its independence, are worthy to bear the great and prideful title of Ukrainian citizen"........Poroshenko's handing out Ukrainian Citizenship to soldiers coming from other countries to fight...... He should not have made this so public as people are watching what he does carefully....not to mention now this guy will be targeted .

FYI:

In Nov.... Vadim Troyan, deputy commander of the neo-nazi Azov Regiment and active member of the neo-nazi paramilitary organisation Patriot of Ukraine (the paramilitary wing of the Social-Nationalist Assembly)... has been appointed by Ukraine Minister of Interior Arsen Avakov as the "head of the Kiev police.".....Right Sector fascist 'Borislav Bereza', now elected as member of parliament, said that his organisation would be working closely with the police force.....these developments certainly confirms further incorporation of far right, fascist and neo-nazi elements into the state apparatus

Here the "Patriots of Ukraine" marched with all sorts of nazi paraphernalia.

Video of this march is here:

Interesting...but not all that surprising as you know.

I just really wish our news media would flush out the facts of what’s happening in Ukraine. You note after the appointments Poroshenko’s made, of putting Right Sector thugs in his Governance,...not a word of objection from the Whitehouse about this.

Just as bad is the public here doesn’t understand the dynamics happening in Ukraine even when they are reported. It’s the same with the Islamic threat when this is clearly reported and obvious.

It’s so frusrating our people are being so deceived on what’s happening here and on the International Stage.

Zbigniew Brzezinsky himself led American Committee for Chechnya. Their help went well beyond non-letal aid and continued well into late 1990s, when Chechnya has factually gained independence only to become a base to push jihad into Ingushetia, Dagestan and mainland Russia proper. A number of active American politicians were members though most of them bailed out and Committee itself renamed after Beslan massacre. Pretty much like todays democrats running from Arab spring support as ISIS got its well-deserved publicity and no propaganda efforts are helpful to convince people that they are freedom fighters opposing government tyrannies in the Middle East.

It is bad thing that it takes FSB to inform you on that, not formerly free American media which is engaged in kissing government butt 24/7.

Not to mention FSB did more to prevent Chechen terror in Boston than all the American alphabet agencies combined. It wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that Russian intelligence and military are doing more to ensure well-being of US troops in Afghanistan than their Commander-in-Chief.
Too bad military is unable to kill terrorists at a rate the state department is spawning them.

They’re going to bail on Ukraine just as we knew they would....nothing left but a debtor nation and poor...Kiev residences are livid...they’ve been watching all these promises fall to the ground....

FYI:

The International Monetary Fund warns Ukraine bailout faces collapse.

The International Monetary Fund has identified a $15 billion shortfall in its bailout for war-torn Ukraine and warned western governments the gap will need to be filled within weeks to avoid financial collapse. The IMF’s calculations lay bare the perilous state of Ukraine’s economy and hint at the financial burden of propping up Kyiv.
