Here's how it works: A guy smokes pot and then robs a convenience store -- voila!-- he becomes one of hundreds-of-thousands who are in prison because they smoked pot.

FYI. In the 80s and early 90s thousands of parolees in CA were sent back to prison for dirty drug tests, positive for mj. Takes a lot morenow.

I spent a couple of weekends in jail for possessing pot. I was never sentenced to prison time.

i'm not sure, but if you are "smoking" it , then you would almost have to "possess" it. unless some one else holds the pipe/spliff for you

While I can't provide the references, the historical accounts I've read say that prior to federal prohibition, there were a few state and local laws against smoking marijuana. Phohibition of possession wouldn't have been practical, since hemp was still commonly grown as a commodity crop. I shouldn't think it unreasonable to assume that there were some successful prosecutions and incarcerations for violations of those laws.
