The language thing was getting really bad in Houston when we left a few years ago. Many job ads there also wanted people who spoke both English and Spanish. People were speaking Spanish all over the place. If we hadn't left, I think I would've ended up wanting to take Spanish lessons just so I could communicate with the many people there who only spoke Spanish. It shouldn't have to be that way though.

Nope...it shouldn't have been that way. My grandmother came to the US as a child from Norway. She lived in a Norwegian community and never really learned to speak much English until my grandfather died in a lumber accident and she had to go to work to take care of the kids. She did learn, so worked hard, she bought income property and she spent the rest of her life traveling around the world. No one catered to her! No one suggested that she couldn't do it or shouldn't do it (learn to speak English). I bet most of our ancestors were the same way. So what's the deal with Spanish??? The people I know who are here from Mexico want to speak English and assimilate. I am sick and tired of hearing the liberal line about minorities! It's just so much debilitating bull$hit, imo.
