American woman peace activist killed by IDFbulldozer in Gaza

An American woman peace protester was killed Sunday by an IDF bulldozer, which ran her over during the demolition of a house at the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip.

Another activist was wounded in the incident.

Rachel Corey, 23, from Olympia, Washington, was killed when she ran in front of the bulldozer to try to prevent it from destroying a house, doctors in Gaza said.

"Corey was killed in the al-Salam neighbourhood when an Israeli bulldozer covered her with sand as she stood in front of a bulldozer," said Dr Ali Musa, a doctor from the al-Najar hospital in the southern Gaza Strip.

He said she died from skull and chest fractures.

The IDF said it was checking the report.

Greg Schnabel, 28, from Chicago, said the protesters were in the house of Dr. Samir Masri.

"Rachel was alone in front of the house as we were trying to get them to stop," he said. "She waved for bulldozer to stop and waved. She fell down and the bulldozer kept going. We yelled 'stop, stop,' and the bulldozer didn't stop at all. It had completely run over her and then it reversed and ran back over her."

Since the start of the Intifada, groups of international protesters have gathered in several locations in territories, setting themselves up as "human shields" to try to stop IDF operations.

Corey was the first member of the groups, called "International Solidarity Movement," to be killed in the conflict. Schnabel said Corey was a student at Evergreen College and was to graduate this year.

He said there were eight protesters at the site, four from the United States and four from Great Britain. "We stay with families whose house is to be demolished," he told the Associated Press by telephone from Rafah after the incident.

It's sad really. I don't think these shields understand that it is literally a life and death shooting war in the middle east. It's not a T.V. drama, but brutal and bloody. Being young, raised in a western peaceful society that protects them, these people simply cannot comprehend that death waits for the stupid, careless and naive.

Although I hear what you are saying, I think it is important to have a wider view.

The whole human shield concept is just idiotic. It is symbolism to the max. It can never work in the real world. The loss of a life is unfortunate, but I believe that it will take a few of these loses to maybe get through to those people who are thinking of taking up this activity.

Absolutely. If these creeps were interested in saving LIVES, they would be riding around on buses in Tel Aviv. But they seem to be a lot more interested in saving the HOUSES of homicide bombers. They obviously value property more than human life.

The only way she could have been saved is if the IDF grabbed her and arrested her. And that would have made them vulnerable to gunfire from terrorists.

They made the right choice. There is no reason to sacrifice any soldiers to save someone who is attempting to protect terrorists.

We sympathize with the victims of terrorism---not with the enablers, abettors and defenders of terrorism. The alternative to killing terrorists is to allow them to kill us. Israel is fighting a terror war waged against them, that they did not start, when they bulldoze the homes of terrorists.

The anonymous "they" have been quoted in newspapers saying that the Israeli policy of destroying houses is "the worst kind of terrorism".

I find it very hard to dig up *any* compassion for someone who:

1.) thinks that *she* (in this case) is the only one that matters in this world,
2.) deliberately tries to violate Mother Nature's Laws of Physics,
3.) tries to impose her political views on people through extortion,
4.) wants a pass for her lack of common sense,
5.) doesn't know her history, and
6.) was upset because she couldn't get on American Idol/Jerry Springer/etc.

I don't respond well to emotional blackmail. She had a choice, and chose wrongly. At least the wrong place and time.
