There's a stark distinction between scientific theory (evolution) and mythological fantasy (intelligent design); scientists would be well-served to remember that distinction. At the very least, in order to displace the centrality of evolution, one requires a competing theory, rather than one preferred fantasy out of a myriad of fantasies..
