Man plummets to his death in drug raid

A 21-year-old man plunged seven storeys to his death in the West End Saturday morning just as Vancouver police were entering his suite on a drug-related search warrant.

At 10:30 a.m., police announced themselves and opened the door a crack when the man went on to his balcony and tried to make an escape.

"We believe the man tried to jump on to an adjacent balcony and fell to his death," said Const. Sarah Bloor.

The man died on the scene in the 1600-block Burnaby Street.

Vancouver police were assisting the RCMP "E" division on a drug-related search warrant and had brought in the emergency response team because it was believed the man was armed.

"It's an ongoing investigation and the warrant is sealed, so the information I can tell you is very limited," said Bloor.

The major-crimes section and coroner's office are investigating the death, which is being treated as a death in custody.

A neighbour said the 21-year-old approached him before the incident.

"The young man told me he had to get away," the neighbour said through the intercom. "I was next door and he came into my apartment and said he had to get away."

Stephen Gomori, 24, who lives on the second floor, was one of the neighbours who dialled 911.

"I was on the telephone and heard a couple of loud noises and came out and there was a woman on the side of the street yelling, 'Call 911, call 911,'" said Gomori.

"I couldn't really see what was happening. I heard a few bangs, it sounded like someone was banging on the railings."

Eric Vaughan, who lives next door to the man, didn't realize he had fallen from the balcony.

"I was out shopping and came back at 10 o'clock and I just heard a thud," said Vaughan. "But the noises occur occasionally in the building, so I didn't pay attention."

Vaughan, who has lived in the building since 1984, said he had never noticed any suspicious activity from his quiet neighbour.

Residents in the next building described hearing a loud sound as the man fell.

"It woke me up," said Torri Higgins, 29. "It was about 10:30 a.m. and I heard this yelling and screaming sound. It was a guy's voice . . . I can't describe it, it was a kind of scared yelling," she said. "Then I heard a woman yell, 'Call 911.'"

Property manager Greg Gooding said the man was the lone registered occupant and had given notice he planned to vacate the unit by the end of the month.

Yesterday's incident marks the second time in a week that the Vancouver police major-crimes unit has had to launch a death-in-custody investigation. Last Saturday, a mentally ill 36-year-old Vancouver man was shot and killed by police in the 5600-block of Fremlin. Police said the man, a computer programmer, confronted them with a knife.

A Taser gun, which uses an electrical charge to incapacitate targets, was ineffective, said Const. Anne Drennan.

Meanwhile, police continue to investigate the deaths of Benito and Lina Di Spirito, who died on June 24 when a Vancouver police cruiser crashed into the elderly couple's car.

Rule number one when you area cop if your going to lie at least make it beleivable and not so outragous that it rises to the level of science fiction.

Has anyone hear ever heard of cops politely knocking on the door and anouncing themselves and cracking the door just a little to see if anyone is home during a drug related search warrent?Yeah me neither

Sure they normally just bust the doordown screaming, but this case wasn't normal...

...because it was believed the man was armed.

When the police think someone is armed, they announce themselves, crack the door, stick their head in and give the guy a free shot...

Of course the cops are telling the truth.....

I see no mention of drugs found. They always seem to mention that if they did, though.

"A 21-year-old man plunged seven storeys"

Pretty "high" already...

"opened the door a crack"

Didn't I tell you to keep away from crack?

"Eric Vaughan, who lives next door to the man, didn't realize he had fallen from the balcony."

You gotta be pretty stoned not to realize you've fallen from the balcony....

"a Vancouver police cruiser crashed into the elderly couple's car."

Quick, Jimmy, chuck the reefer! We hit granny!

Rule number 2: No matter how good your stuff is, under no circumstances should you ever believe you can fly!

Seriously...the cops' idea of knocking on a door involves a battering ram and 20 SWAT members with fully automatic weapons. This is just spiteful behavior by the drug warriors who refuse to admit that they have LOST the drug war, and they'll take it out on whoever they please.

I guess we must assume that somone was operating the cruiser at the time and that this someone may or may not have been a police officer....lol. I mean, we wouldn't want to implicate anyone or anything.

http://www.lashar.net/ Go to the news section:

Saleh Baloch ( Malikmiran) met a tragic death exactly a week ago. Although there is a great deal of controversy surrounding his tragic and baffling death, there is no question that Saleh Baloch (Malikmiran) was a unique Baloch who had a great sense of balance and love for Baloch people. What are the real fall-outs from this fatal fall, is still unclear. However what is clear is that Saleh Baloch (Malikmiran) who fell to an unfortunate death was popular and known among many Baloch in Pakistan, Iran, Gulf countries, Europe and North America, let alone mentioning far away places such as Australia and Tonga.

His contribution to the Balochi literary life in Pakistan through his financial and moral contribution is well known to everybody. He not only helped Balochi monthly magazines, but also contributed to the Baloch Academy in Quetta and other Balochi institutions.

Baloch2000 is sad and unhappy indeed to see that Pakistani newspapers and media did not mention this heart-rending event. Moreover, Baloch media such as Daily Intekhab, and Baloch daily Azadi took side with Pakistani papers and did not mention Malikmiran’s death. Both Baloch newspapers are full of nonsense news about Baloch politicians as well as Sardars, Nawabs, and Khans, let alone drug dealers and Mullahs as well as Generals.

How it comes that newspapers such Daily Intekhab write about “a mild zokam” (cold) of a Sardar or a Moulana, but not to mention the death of Saleh Baloch. It is a shame indeed for the editors of such so-called Balochi newspapers. We (Baloch2000.com) repeat again that we are not suggesting that they should have made Saleh Baloch a “Hero”. No ! We are not saying that ! What we are saying is simply why they did not mention his death. The Time will expose the truth behind his untimely and tragic death. Nonetheless, his death warrants a simple sentence in a Balochi newspaper. But the question is ? Are Daily Intekhab and Azadi really Balochi newspapers who have the interest of Baloch people? Are They? Just think about it !

I know a group of Balochi's who are very peace loving people trying to seek freedom from paki torture They claim this guy was pushed to his death.
