The only true-to-form performance in Full Metal Jacket was that of R. Lee Ermey (Gunny Sgt. Hartman). According to the movie's website, he didn't rehearse or learn any lines, it was a complete natural performance.

I liked Full metal jacket but the constant hammering away with the anti war theme gets tiresome after awhile. I did like "Animal mother" even though the actor is a true leftist

That was an incredible performance. I didn't know it was off the cuff. Pretty amazing. I watched the movie with my dad who was in the Marines in the 1960s, and he thought the basic training part of the movie was pretty realistic.
