Law abiding US citizens bought on average 3,177,256 guns every 3 months in 2008

That comes out to a little less than 13 million per year. Auto sales in the US, during the peak years, averaged about 18 million vehicles a year (though, now, it's probably around 10 million during this credit crunch). So, it's not unreasonable to see 13 million guns, especially, when it is easier (i.e., cheaper) to purchase several guns than to purchase one vehicle.

The difference of course, is that vehicles get scrapped, on average, after 10 years. A gun will last a lifetime or two. So the 250 millions guns in America will be 400-500 million in 20-30 years (assuming that some guns get scraped due to rust, police confiscation, etc.)
