It was Lee’s first big failure...he could have taken the high ground upon arrival, but waited instead. Even then, it took the admittedly courageous actions of Joshua Chamberlain and the Twentieth Maine to close the line insuring the Union victory. A victory for the South at Gettysburg could have been the straw that broke the camel’s back for the North. More’s the pity.
