Elected office was NEVER intended by the Founding Fathers to be a career position. It was meant to be a limited term of voluntary public service. Exactly. The Founders were extraordinarily wise, but they could not foresee an America where Ted Kennedy and Robert Byrd would have lifetime Senate seats and live like Oriental potentates on the public dole.
