I have you beat by a few years...ancestors settled in Texas in 1830. We lived there until 2005. Finally left due to the heat. Just got tired of two months of 100’s, rest of the time in summer 99’s. Also the property taxes and home owner’s insurance are pretty hefty for retirees.
It was hard to leave Texas, the people there are great but found good people here in the Ozarks of Missouri. We love it here and are not sorry we moved but politics in MO are iffy.
State is pretty evenly divided politically although our county is about 95% conservative. Doubtful the state would ever secede with Kansas City and St. Louis having lots of liberal votes!
1830! Yep, they beat us here.
FWIW, in our County and School Dist., we have a great propery tax exemption for those folks who are 65 and up. It works well for retirees.
As far as the heat goes, I can tolerate it better than the cold of more Northerly climes. At least I can stay in the AC if it gets too hot!
Our County voted against Obama 75%+. About 90% of the Whites voted against him and about 99% of the Blacks voted for him. Hmmmm. Do I detect a split there?
Anyway, we love it here and have no plans to move in the forseeable future.
Good luck in the Ozarks!
