This map shows the proximity of various communities that have been mentioned here to Lewisville. I would recommend looking west of Lewisville rather than east, and not very far to the south and especially not to the southeast. Avoid having to rely much on Highways 35E or 121 as the main route to and from.
Congratulations on the new job — and welcome to the Lone Star State!
I know the DFW area well. Best advice: research the school district first, because your school attendance area has everything to do with stability of the neighborhood and maintaining value in the home. There’s info on the web from both the Texas Education Agency and the local districts, not hard to find.
Traffic along the I-35 corridor can be awful — although being from California, you may be used to that. Best, if you can, to find good neighborhoods and schools very near work. Lewisville is located in the midst of good school districts, neighborhoods, and churches. Do yourself and the family a favor and keep the commute short.
One other thing, and this is more personal: the demographics of your neighborhood and schools will shape your kids values. If you want them growing up with rich kids, absent parents, chasing the buck, then go for the high priced real estate. Coming from California, you may be able to afford it, because our real estate is cheap compared to yours. But you might want to opt for a more established middle-income neighborhood where ordinary folk live, where you’ll have money left to spend on something other than a house and keeping up with those Joneses.
If it’s practical, see if you can lease for a month or two and take your time studying the traffic and visiting schools and churches.
Wishing you and the family a safe move and that you soon truly consider Texas your home.
HI fellow Anaheimer....I actually grew up in Hacienda Heights (go Los Altos Conquerors) but i bought my first home in Anaheim back in around 1990. It was nice but then became overrun with Illegals. My wife is a pretty blond with blue eyes.....she got treated very poorly and we were able to get a transfer and move to Texas, The Colony.
The summer was not that bad at all. In fact, I think CA is just as hot and probably for a longer time.....heck, it can be hot on Thanksgiving in Southern CA. Our AC works good and I am so happy we got a one story home.
I just found out they have Carls Jr. in Texas too! I know it’s not In and Out but it’s the next best thing. They put mustard on their burgers here in Texas and TEX MEX sucks.......chile con carne on their enchiladas......the key is to find a authentic MEX where they use Red Sauce on the enchilida and shredded beef on the Tacos....hard to find.....Anyway....we miss the chinese food in LA.....thats for sure......but Texas is just as pretty as So. CA....greener and much cleaner....
Excellent advice and one which I followed myself when migrating from CT to Keller in 1996.
Excellent advice. Lewisville has a good school district and a well established high school. Flower Mound meets the same criteria. Again, that is why I have recommended staying to the west side rather than the east side of Lewisville. Keller, Southlake, Grapevine are very good and with strong school districts. However, as you start getting that far south and west from Lewisville you start getting into a commute that will be at least an hour each way before and after work. I love living in Keller, but I would not want the commute from Keller to Lewisville every day.
I, like some of the others here, live in Keller.
The hottest area in the country now appears to be Collin County - McKinney, Frisco area north of Dallas - but it’s a toll road up there from Lewisville.
I work in Irving so have about a 30 minute drive to work, but am glad every day that I live west of Dallas County. People are more friendly, drivers are more friendly (and sane - if I can use that word when talking about drivers), and the area is just safer in general.
Trophy Club is a nice area in Tarrant County, as is Southlake and Westlake(if you have some money). All three are relatively close to Lewisville.
Welcome to DFW!
Avoid any job that requires travel on I-635, that is pure stop and go traffic except Sunday morning. I-35 is marginally better.
Get a home as small and cheap as possible and practical, because property taxes are the biggest tax bite here.
Avoid HOAs. In this state, they are one of the few people who can foreclose on the house.
Do NOT live in Addison or Dallas city limits.
Fort Worth is better than Dallas, but the suburbs of other are better than in the city.
Grapevine and Colleyville, if you can afford it, have the best schools and excellent employment opportunities. ObamaCare Jokes Obama Jokes
Glad you are moving to TEXAS, you are gonna love it.
I have lived here since retiring from the Army in 86, and if you are gonna work in Lewisville, give Lewisville a shot.
Why, well when the gas prices go up, and they will with Bammy hating oil companies, and the Crap and Raid bill I would plan on keeping my commuting bills low.
In the general area around Lewisville, Flower Mound is nice, growing and have nice homes. Also consider Frisco. When I moved here it was a small town with a couple of subdivisions and a dairy queen, boy it has grown. Good schools, good neighborhoods, and if you are leaving California you will find most real estate in Texas more affordable, and with no state income tax you might have a bit extra to spend on a home. Warning on Texas, lots of churches, so many that left leaning folks would feel outta place here. Your neighbors will actually talk to you, or will leave you be, whatever you want.
Welcome home bro, you are gonna love it here. Remember that Texans are proud of our state, fit in and you will find your new home fits just fine.
Best places to live around Lewisville for families is Flower Mound, Highland Village, Coppell(which is where I live).
Adventures in moving PING!
My advice is ‘’’ do not refer to your new location as Dallas, Texas.
Just Dallas.
On hold until judge Lyndsay decides.
Sneaky Pete’s is fun and right on the lake. Don’t get there much since it’s on the other end of town where I live.
But be careful where you walk because last time I was there we ended up walking by a snake about 3-4 feet long in the parking lot and he wasn’t very friendly.
Yeah, we haven’t been hit as hard.
How did you stand DFW for 12 years?
I think 6 Flags is Chap. 11 or 13.
LOL, I know, hard to believe. Now days you have to show up in a “Brooks Brother’s Suit”. LOL.
My parents lived in Euless for 30 years. When I first started visiting them, there was still a lot of empty land, scrub woods and bean fields. They growth rate has been amazing. When I flew in and out of DFW, you couldn’t see their house from the air because there were so many trees.
Sorry RebelTXRose,
I mean no disrespect, but you think that Texas, let alone Mesquite, TX, is a great place to live?! I am sorry, but you must have extremely low standards. I not only lived in Texas, but I grew up in the Mesquite area, and I witnessed the city (and most of Dallas) get worse and worse. It is a terrible place to live, and the best places in Dallas area is not much better. (Park Cities, Plano, Carrollton, Richland Hills, etc.)
I would recommend an entirely different state! If one is coming from California to Texas, I am afraid you will truly be sorry. While the majority of people in Texas are generally much more polite than the people in Boston, Boston would be a much safer bet as far as MOST careers (maintaining / building, etc.) than a rat hole like Texas! ANY major metro hub on the west coast would be far better than anything in Texas. Sorry!
I’m sorry if you had a bad experience in Texas. I was born there and it is HOME! I’ve even lived in Mesquite. There is not a metropolitan area in the country that doesn’t have the good and the bad. I can’t wait to get back in the Lone Star State. New York is a beautiful state. The folks up here are very oppessed compared to the citizens of Texas.
As for my “extremely low standards” OH MY!
