In WW2 you could simply draft an intern or a resident into the army. No need to worry about rank as long as he was an officer. In a volunteer force you need to attract doctors. I knew a guy that enliste in the USAF so that he’d get medical school paid for. Instant O-2. He could barely wear the uniform correctly. On graduation, automatic promotion to captain. I imagine that major is pretty much automatic to induce a re-up.

Does anybody know if Hasan has come out of his coma? Imagine his surprise (the look on his face) when he wakes up and isn't in the presence of 72 virgins.

While there should be incentives to attract Doctors into the U.S. Military, I don't believe that they should be allowed to be fully Commissioned Officers. Why not just make them Supervisors or Warrant Officers instead?

I doubt he went to the strip club to put in an order for his 70 virgins. Unless he’s very stupid.

The USN used to distinguish between “Line Officers” and special officers (like doctors and JAG officer/lawyers) by substituting an oak leave in place of the more familiar star above the cuff band on the uniform sleeve or the shoulder board.

I’m not sure if this is still widely done. There are some officers, like academy grads, who still wear line officer insignia after becoming lawyers or physicians.

Warrants might work but you’d have to expand the ranks so that you’d have a pay grade equivalent to full-colonel/O-6. Right now a CW-4 is paid an equivalent of a Major/O-4, if I’m not mistaken. I think the Marines have a CW-5...

In any case, you’re not going to have a doctor issuing orders in a tactical situation.
