With all the fuss being made over - An Inconvenient Truth - the movie and book by Albert Gore Jr., it is appropriate to review his 1992 book: Earth in the Balance. This review will cover two key aspects of this book: his so-called couple between carbon dioxide and temperature; and his extremism.
Gore discussed the carbon dioxide (CO2) - temperature relationship on page 94. He showed a graph of temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration plotted versus time over a span of 160,000 years. With the exception of one point, his graph comes from chemical analysis of two mile deep ice core samples from Antarctica and Greenland, which is valid and exciting scientific data. Gore has called the data behind this chart as the most compelling evidence of a correlation between CO2 and temperature change.
Both variables exhibit a saw-tooth profile. The graph for each variable is of a similar shape, and appear to move somewhat in parallel. Based on such a chart Gore made the claim that CO2 concentration and temperature have moved in lockstep over this period. The word lockstep is far too strong for a simple visual correlation. The implication is also made that the change in CO2 concentration precedes the change in temperature, and hence is the cause for the change in temperature. However, it is impossible to tell this from such a graph. Indeed one could just as easily claim the reverse.
The behavior of these two variables represent the change in each variable due to the changes in other major variables, particularly the orbital parameters of planet Earth as it travels around the sun. Yet Gore is basing all of his conclusions on his eye-balled correlation.
Further, this data is highly compressed and displayed over a space little more than two inches in width in his book. The basic time unit is estimated at 2,500 years per point. A single tic on this graph—say 1/32nd of an inch in width—would represent 2,500 years of history. Thus a mere 1/32nd of an inch would represent the huge number of weather events over 2,500 years, averaged to a single point.
The second problem with this graph is the last point shown. This is not part of the scientific record. Rather it is one scenario projection, out of dozens of scenarios, of the future CO2 level. This step is particularly egregious as this point brings the graph height to seven inches, on a graph that would only be two inches tall otherwise. This is pure distortion and misrepresentation.
This critique is a perfect example of Gore gaining some validity by “cherry picking” valid scientific data, but simplifying it, extrapolating it and misrepresenting the situation until it literally has no meaning.
On a second subject, some of the writings by Gore are quite disturbing. Several quotes are examined.
* In the first quote he equates the dangers to the environment to the dangers of nuclear war. “Nuclear war is an apocalyptic subject, and so is global environmental destruction.”
Can this be a truly sound judgement of the state of the environment after years of the EPA, after years of automobile fuel and exhaust improvements and after billions of dollars of environmental control investments in all our utility and manufacturing industries?
* The next quote broadens the doomsday view to the ecology. “Today the evidence of an ecological Kristallnacht is as clear as the sound of glass shattering in Berlin.”
Again can this be viewed as a precise, sound and fair diagnosis of the ecological situation? In this quote he equates Americans’ use of natural resources with Nazism. He goes on “...the environmental crisis is so serious that I believe our civilization must be considered in some basic way dysfunctional. “... In this terrible century... we have witnessed some especially malignant examples of dysfunctional civilization: the totalitarian societies of Nazi Germany under Hitler, fascist Italy under Mussolini ... in psychological terms, our rapid and aggressive expansion into what remains of the wildness of the earth represents an effort to plunder from outside civilization what we cannot find inside.”
Yes, in Gore’s mind, our society’s embrace of what he calls consumptionism, resembles Nazi Germany society’s embrace of totalitarianism.
* Next he contrasts the richness of nature to the emptiness of industrial civilization. According to Gore we live in an “inauthentic world of our own making. “Life can be easy, we assure ourselves. “We need not suffer the heat or the cold; we need not sow or reap or hunt and gather. “We can heal the sick, fly through the air, light up the darkness, and be entertained in our living room by orchestras and clowns whenever we like.” Further into this quote he observes this false world was created by people to distract people from their psychic pain. He asserts that the world of leisure, air conditioning, industrial agriculture, modern medicine, and home entertainment is not good in itself. “It is but a fleeting sideshow.” Finally he claims that only by somehow awakening from such in-authenticity will the cycle of psychic pain and environmental plunder be broken. It is not quite clear how Gore, who grew upo in a hotel, earned credentials to decide what is authentic in life and what is not.
Gore seems to have come up with the following modus operandi. First he will proclaim an unprecedented environmental catastrophe is at hand. Next he will indicate only a handful of ignorant and unqualified dissenters oppose this assessment. Finally he would indicate that such dissenters are preventing him from moving ahead to solve this problem.
As noted above Gore has a strange streak of extremism in his makeup. He clearly is not happy with our society. He equates environmental activists to resistance fighters. But does not this group of activists include eco-saboteurs? Clearly Gore does not limit his concern to just the environment, but declares that we are in a midst of political, informational, inner-spiritual and deep philosophical crisis. He, I believe,claims to be the sole author of his book and to have put his heart and soul into it. He seems to believe in his book and all its comparisons of our society with Nazi Germany’s or to the former USSR’s. All of the above quotes and comments have earned him the extremist tag.

The book “Earth in the Balance Ecology and the Human Spirit” is by Al Gore, the former office-holding politician. A lot of fascinating research today examines ecology and environmentalism. The work often shows how concerns about the earth translate into government action. There are often frightening stories that predict an ecological armageddon, and the predictions are used to advocate anti libertarian laws.
Most predictions need more information about the past, including the actual history of environmental disasters. The research is usually shallow in the sense that it should review more real-life links to the most shocking ecological disasters in history.
The worst environmental disasters occurred in the socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part): 65 million slaughtered under the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR); 49 million under the Peoples’ Republic of China (PRC); 21 million under the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSGWP). After WWII, Stalin and Mao went on to kill even more people.
The leaders preached socialism to acheive a utopian society of ecological bliss, and they worshipped government as a savior, they hated capitalism, and they led to an ecological armageddon three times over. Socialism is environmentally disastrous.
Cuba, eastern Europe, the former USSR, The PRC and other socialist messes have demonstrated that the Malthusian theory is manifested only in socialist economies.
Modern environmentalists in the USA are very similar. They follow in the footsteps of Francis Bellamy (author of the Pledge of Allegiance) and Edward Bellamy (author of the book Looking Backward) who predicted a serene environment through efficient government planning.
The Bellamys promoted a government takeover of schools in order to create obedient citizens who would do as they were instructed by the government and by politicians, in order to create utopia. The Bellamys wanted a flag in every school and they wanted children to robotically chant for twelve years of their lives every morning in government schools (socialist schools) in worship of governments.
The Bellamys were self-proclaimed National Socialists and Edward’s book was called the Bible of National Socialism. It was an international bestseller and was translated into every major language, including German, Russian, and Chinese.
Bellamy’s comments in the Sprinfield Union newspaper show his glorification of German folk life. According to the biographer Sylvia E. Bowman, “To Bellamy, Americans had much to learn from the Germans who enjoyed nature, had outdoor summer houses and beer gardens, and from all of these, had found a placid contentment which contrasted to the hustle and bustle of American life.”
The Bellamys influenced socialists all over the world. The early Pledge of Allegiance used a straight-arm salute and it was the origin of the salute of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party, as discovered by the historian Dr. Rex Curry. The USA was using the raised-arm salute to the national flag for three decades before German National Socialists started doing the same thing.
Many people were persecuted for refusing to give the straight-arm salute to the national flag. They considered it to be the worship of government. That occurred in the USA and in Germany at the same time. Today, most people in the USA were educated in socialist schools (government schools) so they are ignorant of the fact that it was happening in the USA (to the stars and stripes) and in Germany (to the swastika flag) at the same time.
People had good reason to consider the pledge to be the worship of socialism. Most people do not know that a cross was worshiped as the notorious symbol of the National Socialist German Workers’ Party. The group called their symbol the Hakenkreuz, not the swastika. Hakenkreuz means “hooked cross.”
Although the swastika was an ancient symbol, Professor Rex Curry (author of Swastika Secrets) discovered that it was also used sometimes by German National Socialists to represent “S” letters for their “socialism.” With a 45 degree turn of his Hakenkreuz, the leader of German National Socialists combined the cross with collectivism, merged church and state, meshed religion and socialism, and mandated the worship of government. He altered his own signature to use the same symbolism and similar alphabetic symbolism still shows on Volkswagens.
Modern environmentalists have similarities to the leaders of the socialist Wholecaust. Those leaders also advocated government control over cars. Modern environmentalists direct a lot of anger toward cars.
Before the Volkswagen was rescued from its totalitarian socialist origin and restored to capitalism, the leader of German National Socialists mandated the Volkswagen as the “peoples’ car” in his so-called utopia. Even so, many modern environmentalists like Volkswagens (and would like to mandate Volkswagens for everyone, or something similar), despite the fact that Volkswagens are the product of capitalism now.
And for engineering in general, socialist countries are infamous for the worst, gas guzzling, unreliable, polluting engines, trucks, etc of all time.
In 1939 the National Socialist German Workers’ Party and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics joined as allies to invade Poland in a pact to divide up Europe.
It is frightening how far the USA joined in the depravity. Children in government schools were being forced to robotically chant the pledge to the national flag with the straight-arm salute. Socialists persecuted the children, expelled them from the socialist schools, arrested their parents, seized children from parents on allegations of “unfit parenting,” and many children had to flee and use the many better alternatives, including home-schooling and their own church schools (but they and their schools were often persecuted by socialists there also). The pledge is still mandated by law, even though the gesture has changed.
At the height of National Socialism abroad, the USA’s government deliberately fell farther into the same abyss with national numbering of humans imposed in 1935 with the social security system. The federal government was growing massively and attempting to nationalize the economy in many ways. The US Supreme Court struck down much of the new legislation as unconstitutional until justices were pressured by the “switch in time that socialized nine.”
It is sad to note that during the same time period in the USA, Jewish folks who were fleeing the National Socialist German Workers’ Party (NSGWP) were turned away from the USA, and knowingly sent to suffering and death. That happened because of socialists who support restrictions on immigration and on every American’s right to hire, to do business, and to freely associate. It was similar to today. Socialists in the USA still support restrictions on immigration and they reject the right of every American in living with, having sex with, marrying, renting to, selling to, buying from, hiring (as housekeeper, lawn man, doctor, nanny, teacher etc) any person with whom that American wishes to associate. Little has changed.
The Bellamys were bigots and racists and they obsessed about immigrants coming into the USA and how it would harm the environment. They wanted to impose a heavy-handed method of brain-washing immigrants and all Americans into accepting their socialist dogma. Because of the Bellamys, the USA has a long history of turning immigrants away from being good Americans and independent capitalists, and in turning immigrants into socialists who are dependent on government.
The Bellamys promoted a government takeover of schools. When the government granted their wish, the government schools imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official government policy.
It all shows how close the USA came (and is still coming) to the socialist Wholecaust (of which the Holocaust was a part): the USSR (65 million dead); the PRC (49 million dead); the NSGWP (21 million dead). Many Americans are sad examples of how places like that come into existence, grow so large, last so long, and kill so many.
Much of the modern work about environmentalism is written to make the stories relevant to current events. Such stories are relevant to the fact that the present government in the USA is anti libertarian and is out-socializing the previous administration by more than double and growing (in social spending ALONE). The demonic dogma of socialism, sacrifice, and self-sacrifice is still growing all over the world.
The USA still follows similar anti libertarian policies promoted by the Bellamys. Many socialist Bellamy policies caused the USA’s big, expensive and oppressive government and its growing police-state. The Pledge still exists along with laws mandating that teachers lead the robotic pledge chanting every day for twelve years of each child’s life (though the salute was altered). The government still owns and operates schools, including the same schools that imposed segregation by law and taught racism as official government policy. The U.S. practice of imposing segregation by law in government schools and teaching racism as official policy even outlasted the National Socialist German Workers’ Party by over 15 years. After segregation in government’s schools ended, the Bellamy legacy caused more police-state racism of forced busing that destroyed communities and neighborhoods and deepened hostilities. Those schools still exist. Infants are given social security numbers that track and tax them for life. Government schools demand the numbers for enrollment.
The best environment is a capitalist environment. The color of a healthy environment and the color of money are the same. Mother Nature is a capitalist. Capitalists are the true greens. ~
